New Tork, Sept. 28. Bradateefs tomor row will say: A veritable ground swell of new buying has been experienced at leading center this week. Jobbers, wholesale dealers, retailer and manufacturers all share In the upward movement and Interior merchants, even In tones whero the wheat and cotton crops are short, are-buying freely, lest there be not enough g'ods to go around later on. Soma cities .eport record sales by retail dealers. Manufacturers in leading tndustr'ls are handicapped by lack of efficient labor, and though shipments are heavy, order books remain clogged. In that excellent barometer of conditions, the steel trade, higher prices rule, deliver! s are falling fartHer behind, domestic con sumers fully recognise the futility t waiting for lower quotations and the situation seems to have arrived at the point whero Europe stands ready to step In with well-nigh un limited orders If assurance can be made that the eteel will be forthcoming as needed. Wheat Values Develop Strength as Result of Scarcity of Offerings. Chicago, Sept. 32. Aggressive buying of wheat resulted today from unfavorable crop conditions In Argentina and from export transactions that aggregated 1,600,000 bushels. The close, although unsettled, was c to 3o net higher, with December at $1.63 to $1.63 and May at $1.53. Corn gained o to lc, and oats c to c. Provisions final quotations ranged from II c decline to an equal advance. Except Just at the close, wheat prices were on the up-grade virtually throughout the session. A scarcity of offerings were evident right at the outaet and It was not long before bulls were Indulging In a stampede necaune of advices that rains in Argentina had failed to affect the drouth the lack of moisture being In the north, whereas the rains had fallen In the south and west. Further upturns In values came about from assertions that mills In the la kotaa were shut tins down, owlna to diffi culty In obtaining supplies, but a greater stimulus lay in the Tact that the export demand had broadened to a material ex tent, but that a substantial part of the loreisn iraue participating was tor ship ment to France. One of the additional elements that gave strength to the what market was a pre diction from a leading authority that the planted acerage was likely to show a ma terial decrease this fall In the soft-wheat states. The hulllsh effect of this forecast waa only offset In part hy reports that the Illinois area would probably be enlarged as much as 14 per cent Profit taking oh the part of early buyers was in progress when the gong brought transactions to an end. Unfavorable crop reports from Ohio did a good deal to lift the corn market Wheat strength was also a bullish factor. Oats rose chiefly In consequence of the upturn In other cereals. Export house trade was fair oy ouyers ot ruture aeilverles. Provisions were active. An advance In the hog market caused a general setback In prices.
