MENOMA CHORUS IS
WARMLYlELCOliED
New Organization Mukei Its Bow
to Public and Win Approval
by Its Performance,
MRS. WTXPTON THE SOLOIST
By HKMIIETTA M, REK.g.
The Initial bow of th Menoma chorua
wa made last evening at the Boyd
theater, when this body of fifty ma'e
voice un)er the direction of Jamc Ed
ward Curnal gave It first annual concert
(tpontanooua applause greeted the chorus
upon the raining of the curtain gnd a
moat cordial reception was given to Mr
Carnal. Thi chorus I composed of about
fifty male vole, evenly divided Into th
various parts, making a well balanced
organliatlon. In ih m ilo performed th
member gave g highly creditable ac
counting of Ihemsclve. singing with good
nsnmhln. variety of dynamic quantities
snd egoollent rhythm. The attack was
prompt and unanimous, the enunciation
wa rlear gnd understandable, and the
result of much eerloug and careful work
upon th part of both conductor and
Chorus were constantly In evidence.
Tha program wag popular and con
tained many well-known favorite ar
ranged for male chorus, besides many
other enjoyable nurrrliers. Instant favor
was won with th flrat group, "The Bong
of th Viking," by Fanning, and "When
the Corn I Waving," by Buck. Two
numbers by Neldllnger, "Afton Waters''
snd "rtwoet Mgry," made up the second
group, the former notable for mucheare-l
ful shading, An encore wa granted
after the selection. The choru did
Its heat work In the third group, wtiere
three arrangement were presented.
"Mammy's Lullaby," an arrangement of
the Dvorak "Humoreeque." by flpross,
with th crooning words In disject, wa
followed by Ooall s "Goodbye," which In
turn preceded an arrangement of "Old
Black Jos," by Foeler-Perke. In Tostl's
Uoodbye" there a much charaeter
and vitality ud the widely contrasts
mood war afciy prnted. This added
lo th graceful arrangement mad It one
of th most enjoyable numbers of the
whole evening.
For the closing number "Comrades Jn
Arms," full of fire gnd rhythm, wJ pre-
annlcd.
, Th fololat. Mr. Mahal! Crawford
Welplon and Mr, Henry Oox, need no In
Itotluctlon to Omaha audience Mrg,
Welpmn has not bi heard In om

Her voice 1 resonant and powerful and
especially beautiful In It glowing tones,
which last night seemed deeper gnd more
glorious than ever, Of the flvg songs
of Ihe flrat group "Mandolin,"' by De
bussy, "r'andmaenrhen," by Brahms, gnd
the 'I-ave and the Wind," appealed
especially. At the close Mr. Welpton
was literally overwhelmed with flowers
which were banked high upon the piano.
In the second group Mrs. Welpton sang
songs of vast contrast with careful In
terpretative consideration and musical
charm, "The Song In th Desert," by
Oertrude Ross In a descriptive bit, which
wa given with eloquent effect, and wa
followed by an unusual attractive song
by La Forge, "To a Messenger." pre
sented with great freedom and brilliancy.
Another encore w demanded. Th op
portunity of hearing Mr. Welpton
come too eldom,
Mr. Co conducted the Omaha Cham
ber Music society In n group and played
tha Hvendsen "Romance,'' gccnmpanlad
by the string orcheatrg, displaying beauty
of lone and repoae In manner In hi solo
work, gnd hi customary mulclanly qua)
Itlea In hi conducting, Th orchetr
wa heard In advantage In "Air d Bal
let, by llorbert, end "Mock Morris
Dance," by Grainger, gnd responded to
an ncorn with firalnger' setting of a
lovely old Irish melody In which great
warmth nf tonal beauty and Intensity
of expression made an excellent effect.
Mlas Orac Hlahaugh and Mr. H. W,
Thornton, with their skillful accompani
ments, added a large share to Jthe sue
ceaa of the evening.
The audience was not large, hut was
highly appreciative and aoemed to thor
