SAYS WIDOWS NEED
A HELPING HAND
Mrs. Katherine Drummy, Police
woman, Addrenet Newly Or
fniied Society.
TEMPERANCE WORKER SPEAXS
Omaha's only policewoman, Mra.
Katherine Drummy, gave the newly
organlred Society of AmerlcgQ
Widows big boost last evening
when she declared that many fallen
women could bave been saved bad
they been helped by some sisterly
organization.
"I meet all kinds of women, and
I can nay that lot of them wouldn't
be what they are today If they had
a helping band to aid thrm at the
critical moment. There la a crying
need for some organisation to help
Ihe widows in their effortg to help
themselves," said Mrs. Drummy.
Another speaker in favor of the widow's
organlxatlou was Mrs. Alice Minick, well
known temper-arc e worker. "We widows
who have gone through many trying ex
ierienc.es should lie willing to lend u
helping hand to young, r widows." ah de
clared. "This new organliatlon will not
end all our troubles, hut it can be mad
a school of methods for young widows.
Here they ran learn what difficulties we
have overoome and how they ahould meet
similar difficulties."
Mrs. Mlnlck read soma original verse
dedicated to the widows' organlxalton.
The Widows' club will change popular
sentiments regarding widows, will set a
new standard for her rights and will be
a panacea for a number of widows' Ills,
according to Mra. Minick.
Mrs Btells WUson only practicing
woman lawyer in Omaha, also favors the
new organliatlon
Mrs. Bessie Turpin. the founder, read

Underwood Attacks
The Powder Trust
WASHINGTON, March 31.-A deter
mined fight wss begun in the sena'.e
today by Senator Underwood of Ala
bama, to increase or Incorporate In the
army reorganisation bill a provision
looking to the establishment of a gov

the air for the manufacture of zgpij
slves. Efforts to Incorporate such legis
lation In Ihe house bill were defeated.
Senator Underwood declared that no
national defense program would be com
plete without this provision. He attacked
the riu 1'ont Powder company and Its
agents, charging them with exerting
powerful Influences to defeat such legis
lation because of a desire to control
sll the powder business In the United
Slates snd to prevent the government
from entering the field. In this connec
tion he declared that Hudson Maxim,, a
member of the navy's civilian aJvlsory
bosrd. was a consulting engineer of the
Dti Pont Powder company, and ai such
had chsracterized congressman who
fought for a government nitrate plant
ss "pork barrel politicians."
