Torpedolns; of, vesaels with Americans aboard resulted today In lower prices for wheat The mar Wet closed unsettled. ,(34c to Ho down, st ,1.04 for May and tL06VS.l.06 for July. Corn gained 1.8c to too net, oata flniahed Wo to wa off and prtvisloaa up 24c to 10c. Wheat had rallied from an early de cline, but when attention was turned to ino notable increase of hostilities arainst shipping the market headed sharply nown grade. The wakness at the outset was due chiefly to rains In the southwest where the lack of adequate moisture of late has been impeding growth. Advices, however, that prolonged winter conditions In Canada and a scarcity of labor there were virtually certain to cause a big de crease In tho extent of seeded acreage led afterward to an advance above yes terday's closing prices: Aggressive selling and a lack of sup port characterized the wheat market in the final hour. In addition to the bearish effect of the destruction of vessels and the chances of renewed tension between the T'nited States and Oermany. the ef fect of the breaking of the drouth seemed to be gaining In force. Weather of a kind to retard the move ment of the corn crop brought ahsut utrength in the corn market. A proxpprt of a smaller receipts made speculative short sellers unusually Inclined to weak end evening up of trades. In the oats trade, bears had an advan tage owing to reports that planting was actively going on, 'Socially throughout central Illlnola. It was said that for oats the ground was In the best condition In years. Provisions roue with hogs. Besides, the shipments o meats this week were lib eral a cm:: I d with a year iigo. The market from start to flnlah has been in very sat la foe lory condition throughout the entire weea. moee on beef steers firmed up auite raoldly dur ing the early part of the week, so that the good to choice Kinds at the close of the week are fully as high as they have been any time this year. Cattle Belling from around 88.80 and under hare not shown quite no muo.i advance, bo that the previous week'B decline is not entirely recovered. Still they are not over ltrd-lio lower than the high point. Cowa and helfera have been in good de mand throughout the week and have strengthened up under f res buying until they are fully aa high a they have been any time this year. . . Feeders have been In fair demand for this season of the yaar. and, If anything, they are a little stronger than a week ago. or at the high point ot the year. HOOB While today's arrlvala were of very slim proportions, total offerings were lainv tioerai ror a oniuruay, um wmn twenty and twenty-five loads, which by the way were mostly of light and mixed tuff, being carried over from Friday. The trade In light and mixed hoge presented a very uneven appearance. The proportion of these kinds In the offerings waa unuaually large. Aa compared with bids mado on the extreme cloae yester day, many of today' sales of light and mixed hog were aa much as lOSj'Lbo higher, but on the other hand were little If any stronger than sales of similar stuff made on the earlier trade yesterday. Bulk ahowed a very wide apread, a good share of the aale being made at fji.b6. Beat heavies reached 89.66, equalling the beat price paid ao far this week. Good hogs have been advancing steadily all week, and are now selling 26c above a week ago. Leas desirable kind, expecially the mixed and under weight hogs, are In no Instance more than lotploo up for the week, and In many cases show little or no advance. Vp to toduy they have been selling on a prac tically steady baala all week, and have been extremely bard to move at any price, a bid being a aale in many caaua. T S3 SHEEP-The week' supply of both sheep and lamb waa. as a general thing, moderate, the total being the smallest In weeks, and valuea held a conHlstently stronger ton. During the first half of the week lamb values advanced 264j86c, tope Wednesday reaching 811.60, a new high record. Thursday prices reacted a little under pressure of the only heavy run of the week. This decline was also partially due to the fact that the local trade waa far higher, comparatively than any other m&rkei. Friday the price Hat strengthened up again, hut failed to recover the slump of the previous day, and closing quota tion are a big quarter aoove last rn day, tons having again made the record price of 311.60. owing to the lightness of receipt and the Increasing scarcity of gocd light lambs, discrimination against the good 83 to 86 pound lamb was less marked, and early In the week many of the Colorado or this weigm Drougnt top. or near top figures. The supply of ewes was at no time large enough to really teat the breadth of the outlet, and prloe moved upward steadily, closing at least aV336o above last week. Best ewes offered toward the week' close reached 3X.60. and something choice would probably have brought a little more yesterday. Fair to good kind have shown fully as much. If not more, advance than best grades, a result of the slim run. Practically no wether or year lings were here, but they are nominally quotable at least a quarter higher, fair to choice wethers being put at 88.008.76. Canadians and FrenoliMake Fierce Charges on the West (Oorrepondenoa of the Associated Pre.) BRITISH HEADQUARTERS IN FRANCE, Feb. 2 The Canadian have won a . reputation a good fighter In hand-to-hand encounter. Their ability In thl respect wm lately aemonatrated when an expedition of, twenty-five men started out on a trench raid. They returned with twenty-three men, having accounted for about double their number and destroyed two machine gun and a considerable portion of trench . There had been much activity in the Oerman trenches, and a bombing attack was planned. When darkness fell the bomb thrower crept forward, making low progress. A false move, a cough or a sound of any kind meant Instant death. The guard In the Oerman trenches were apparently In merry mood, and snatches of a love-song came occasionally from tie trench. At laat the barbed-wire entanglements were reached. They were stouter than had been anticipated. It took a long time, but the barrier was out There was a delay. Another party farther along the line was not yet ready for the final rush. Patiently the party waited; they even Joked In whisper. At length the signal oaroe that the other party was ready to advance. The Canadians bounded forward. A Oerman sentry started up to sound the alarm, but he was shot dead by the of ficer. The Germans were now aroused. Flare burst out all along the line and revealed a trench full of tha Prussian guard. The Canadians rushed In. throwing thnlr bomb and bayoneting freely. Their leader was already wounded. The guardsmen had been taken by surprise and rushed In confusion from their dug-outs. One ol them held up his hands and shouted In English that he wished to surrender, but a rifle pointing from behind through hi upraised arms revealed the ruse. A revol ver bullet settled the first man' account and the second went down with a bayo net In hi cheat Farther vp the line a machine gun wa Just beginning to get dangerous when a well directed bomb sent It Into apace. Hand-to-hand the Canadian exacted a heavy toll. They carried everything be fore them, and at the end could go no farther. A heap of dead bodies and de molished trench barred the way. The return Journey to the British trenches had to be made across a bub let -swept area. One man dragging back the body of a comrade, while another wa supporting a wouftded companion, The Canadians halted for an Instant while a bomb ws thrown. It waa the luckiest shot of the whole night. It fell light on the machine gun which was most dangerous, silencing It. April A Prtiaa aoaay. NOT YORK. March 24 The national committee 011 prisons hss designated April ! as "Prison Sunday."
