Railroad Detective
Seriously Injured as
Result of Gun Duel
Special Detective C. A. Lowell ef the
Illinois Central railroad wag taken to the
Pt. Joseph's hospital In a eerloas oendl
tion as ths result of a fun battle be
tween himself and thro armed men In
ths yards near the Omaha Bo factory In
East Omaha about midnight.
As Detective Lowell was ma king his
regulsr rounds of tha yard at that place
alone, three armed men slipped up be
hind him and, after telling htm to halt
one of thera said, "Now we've got you
and we'll get rid of you, too," and then
shot, hitting Lowell in ths left hip and
causing him to drop ths shot gun which
he was carrying. Ha immediately re
tained his balance after tha shook and
drawing his automatic fired the entire
contents st the men, but owing to tha
darkness he wss unable to tell definitely
whether he hit one ef the men, though
he stated that ha was certain ho did.
After the men had left him Lowell
crawled nearly half a mils to the office
ef the Omaha Bog factory where he
aroused the night watchman and had
him notify tbs local police. The emerg
ency car manned by a squad of detec
tives and officers and Polios Surgeon
Miller was rushed to the scene. The
Council Bluffs department was also
notified and sent Its patrol, as the night
watchman ststed that he first thought
Lowell hsd been shot In Iowa, the divid
ing Una between ths two states being
only a few feet from the scene of ths
action.
lowell Is a resident of Chicago, whore
he has a wife and family. The relative
have been notified by ths police of the
shooting.
