peerage was a topic which greatly en
grossed society after he launched M
career as a British subject. Unfortun
ately for his ambitions they were be
clouded by an Incident which U supposed
to have incurred for him King Edward s
displeasure. A popular British officer
is said to have appeared at a reception
at Mr. Astor's London mansion, whose
nam was not on the Invitation list. The
officer arrived with a party of Invited
guestat with whom he had been dining,
which la frequently the case in London
society. Mr. Astor. It Is said, requested
the officer to depart and King Edward
was reported to have been much Irri
tated, sine the officer held a high place
