War Plays Absent
At Berlin Opening
have genuine dramatic atue, rather than
because the public fancy clamor for
anything warlike.
Old-tlmcrs call this beginning: of Ber
lin's theatrical seas n so nearly like the
opening In reare times that It Is hard to
distinguish the difference. They has
this opinion not alone on the attendance,
which certnlnly is Rood, but on the verj
character of the offerings and the
absence of plays suggestive of the war.
The season in 1P14 opened with a tidal
wave of "war" plays. Something of
their tenersl character and excellence
may be gothered from the words of one
of Berlin' well known dramatic critics,
who wrote, "This flood of well meant
and poorly rhvmel, hastily thrown to
gether production fortunately has ebbed,
and the temple of the Joyful muse even,
following the example of the more
serious stage, are turning to other
tasks."
Some Idea of the serious character of
many of tho plays now offered may he
gathered from glimpse at the programs
of the leading Berlin theaters fur the
beginning- of the season. Ic.sing theater
