Oct 8. Of flclal announce ment of a big falling off In the volume jf the French crop gava considerable strength today to wheat prices. Ths market closed strong. IMiC to 10 net higher, with December at M0 and May at Uic. Corn finished tto to lo under last night, oats unchanged and provis ions at an advance of V.to to 16o. Buying impetus In the wheat pit be. came, the most apparent after the atten tion of traders had been directed to the prospect of greatly Increased Imports being needed In France. The Inference was drawn from a leading Chicago au thority that as much ss K4.000.000 bushels would have to be shipped from other countries to meet French requirements. It was furthermore asserted that even this huge total would be Inadequats If the German forces In France were ex pelled and the supplies In the French war sons wera not saved for the civilians of that area. In this connection, how ever, the fact that freight rates on the Atlantic had reached the highest point ever known exercised somewhat of a re straining Influence on the bulls. Rains in Canada and a forecast of general showers over the entire domestic belt tended to lift the wheat market almost from the outset. Notwithstanding that a number of speculators were free sellers on the advance, no pronounced bearish result was at any time noticeable and the close was at virtually the top level of the session. Corn weakened enouith to touch the lowest prices so far this season. The favorable weather acted as a stimulus for sellers, but cove-'na by shorts wss at t'mes on a liberal scale. Oats remained nlmont stntlonarv. CommlKslnn houses fused. Firm offers of 4s ranged from about 8.20c to 8.60o. Rto exchange on London was td higher, while mllrels prices were unchanged at Santos and 76 rels lower at Rio. Londnn Stork Market. LONDON, Oct 1 The stock market was subdued by the Balkan situation. It la extremely rare to find twenty Alplrrtsts together In the high regions, but neither the slae of the huts nor their number seemed to have at tracted suspicion because few Italian Alpinists ever go up Into that part of the Tyrol. Each of these armored lodg ings Is defended by machine guns.
