There were elevatore and grain buyer, but they were not making a market for the. (rain of Nebraaka, Iowa and Omaha trade territory. They simply bought own grain ai happened to enme along and when a carload waa gathered together It waa aent along, going to Chicago, Minneapolis or St. Louis. Something like eleven years ago A. B. Btlckney, then president of the Chicago dreat Western Railroad company, upon one of hia vislta here, called a number of the grain and bualness men together and up to them he put the question: "Why don't you hare a grain maJtet In Omaha?" Mr. Ktickney was Informed that upon numerous occasions attempta had been made to establish a market, but that each attempt had been met with failure. Said he: Telia Tken Hew. ', "Ivt me tell you how to make a mar ket here. The way to do It ta to make the market. Pointing out the way, before the return of Mr. Stlckney to hia home In Minne sota, the Omaha grain ' market was put upon Ita feet and at once became a live competitor with Chicago, Minneapolis, II in sr r raras ia- owa wain ;o.
