Jack Hughes Wins
Golf Championship
of the Field Club
Jack Hughes, former state champion,
won the golf championship of the Field
club Sunday by defeating M. H. La Dou
ceur in the final round, 7 up and 6 to
play. For years Hughes has been striv
ing for the Field club honor, but never
until this year has he been successful,
Tha play Sunday was for thirty-six
holes, but Hughes' gams was so superior
to that of LaDouceur that the match was
over when the thirtieth hole was played.
Hughes played a good, steady gams. His
drives were straight and true, his ap
proach shots nicely laid and putts clev
erly executed, and he deserved to win
the coveted honor.
The field club tourney was featured by
several upsets of the dope. Both Bam
Reynolds and Bill Chambers, who were
favorites to land In the finals, were put
out in the second round. Reynolds was
beaten by Frank Hals and Chambers by
LaDouceur.

Red Sox Improved their position by win
ning lytth games of a double-header from
Chicago, 2 to 1 and 4 to 1, today.
Boston was favored by effective pitch
ing, both Leonard and Shore) holding tha
Chicago to three hits In each game.
In tha first contest Scott, who Is usu
ally successful against Boston, was hit
at critical moments. Gardner's triple
and Lewis' hit scored a run for the Red
Sox In the fourth, and parry's scratch
hit, Oartigan'a fores out, on which th
former was retired, "Weaver' error on
Leonard's rap, and Hoblitxel's double
added the winning run in the seventh.
Chicago got two of Its three hits In the
eighth, when Its only run was scored.
The second game was stopped after
eight Innings by darkness. Faber lasted
only one-third of an Inning, in which
Boston scored three runs. Clcotte, who
succeeded him, held Boston safe until the
eighth, when a pass was developed Into
a run. Chicago's Ion run Cains In tha
first, tha result of two hits and Thomas'
error on Speaker's throw to the plate.
