A sf V i SI iA USHERING INJHOIR LOFT Strange Methods Adopted by Some People to Secure Choice Seats at "Billy'' Sunday Meetings. DEAF MAN HEARS EVANGELIST "Billy" Sumlay looks upon the ushers a I. Is rlirht-hand men In the conduct of the meetings of the tnbernacle. snd while some of them make mlMakes In the han dling of the crowds, he symrnthlzps with trem. However, never bavlng worked' the campaign from the uahprs' annlos, j even he does not fully rfnMze some of I the proliloms that confront tho men who I hour Ittn rwr tM tn th,ll a n .1 n mn 1 the irllttcrlng tin pans that gather In the coin. The ushers are expected, according to the Idea of many of the regular tab ernacle goers, to retain for them the best ieats In the house, regardless of what other people get. Some of these people, when they fall to get the seats that they desire, are peeved, while others swallow the fHsappo'ntment with a gulp and are on hand earlier at subsequent meetings In the choir loft each slnr has his or her seat during the entire campaign. The chair Assigned has a number pasted upon it and the singer has a corresponding number pasted In her or his singing book. During the first two or three meetings there was a little confusion In finding the seats for 1,600 singers, but now the ushers In th choir loft have a snap, for the singers all know the locations and, coming in, promptly march to their places. Mooching; the Seats. However, the usher In th choir loft have their troubles. There are men and women In Omaha who. in order to secure a good stat at the "Billy" Hunday meet ings, have bought the singing books, and some of them have even gone to the ex tent of pasting numbers In these books. In some Instances their nerve has car ried them to the choir loft, and they have been assigned to seats correspond ing to the numbers In their books. Yet, wiien the rightful occupants of the seats have appeared on the scene, the Inter lopers have been firmly, but pleasantly, ejected. 1 At on of th meetings a woman who had a sister singing In the choir insisted that she was entitled to a seat in the choir loft because her sister had a sitting there, and it required an argument of live minutes to convince her that the family relations gave her no preference over the masses. Once convinced, she went into the body of the house, where she was given a fairly good seat, and since then she has been a regular attend ant at all afternoon and evening meetings. Deaf Come to Meeting;. One evening a deaf man came tn one of the ushers with the request that he bo given a seat close enough so that ho could see the lip movements of "Billy" Sunday, asserting that If he was close enough to Mr. Sunday so that he could watch his lips, he could follow the tet t the talk. The man was given a Tront seat, and not once during the evening did he take his eyes ff Mr. Sunday. At the close, he asserted that he had understood every word uttered. A new rule hns been Issued to ths, ushers and it apr led to their badges. In the past urhers. when they hav checked out at the close of the meetings, have been permitted to retain their badges. Vow they turn them In and receive them when they report for duty at th next meeting and show their credentials. It la sssertod that the change Is Ui result of certain ushers, whose names ar kept secret, giving away their badge to friends In order that these friends might secure th choice of seats. Now no badge Is given to an usher until h pre sents the proper credentials and Is prop erly checked off. From the viewpoint of th ushers tn the choir loft. Slayor Dahlman waa on of the most Interested at the Sunday meeting Tuerday night. For the mayor a front seat had been reserved In th alto section of the rholr. During th entlr meeting the mayor watched every gesture and movement of the speaker, enthusias tically Joining In the applause hen som pertinent point was made. After the meeting the mayor remarked to one of the ushers, "It was one of th best things I over heard." - Apartments, flats, houses and cottages can be rented quickly and cheaply by a Be "For Rent," -.1 IT'S ASSIMNJE OF SATISFYING QUALITY THAT BRINGS the CROWDS HERE Mail Orders Filled From Daily Ads Fall Apparel of Unquestioned Charm If yon do not know what extraordi nary progress tliis store has made in tho permnnent solution of individual prob lems of stylo in nppnrel, our offerings Monday will be a surprise and a very pleasant one.
