Cobb Celebrates
Tenth Anniversary
With Detroit Team
. DKTRPIT, yichTAug 28-Tyru Ray
mond Cobb, often referred to as the
greatest bsae ball player In the World, to
day celebrated tha tenth anniversary of
his debut as a major league player.
II was expected that Cobb would re
ceive an unusual demonstration and
probably something more substantial
from his Mends this afternoon when he
stepped to the plate in tha last game of
tha Important aeries with Boston. .
Cobb's path of fame has probably never
(been equalled in the history of bass ball.
For eight successive seasons he has been
champion batsman . of m American
league. Ills average for the present sea
son is about .v4 and it seems almost a
human Impossibility fof any of Ms rivals
to wrest the rrown from birr) this year.
No batter lias ever made such a record.
On August 2n, HXS, a tall, nervous ap
pearing boy of 1 years, from the Aug
usta, Ga., club In a class "C" donned a
Detroit uniform and was sent to center
field by Manager Bill Armour to replace
Dick Cooley. The player was Cobb;
Cooley never got his Job back.
Only oncw In1 these ten yraig lias Cobb
been replaced by a finch hitler. When
he was a youngstor,."Doc" White of the
Chicago club was Ills nemlsla. Catcher
Freddie Payne was sent to bat for Cobb
on this1 single occasion.
In IKK, his I li st, full season, Cobb hit
.330.- That has since teen his low mark.
Cobb has always flayed right or cen
ter field. Only npe day during his De
troit ftnroer has he played . any other
position.
II acted ss a volunteer second base
man ori one oo.-i.sl.in, and he, aa well as
Manager Jennings, ' Admitted ' after the
game, that th Infield did hot lose any.
thing when the (Jairglsn'a first manager
mado an outfielder pf him.
