iwn) Omaha took obth -ends of a
' double-header in the final appearance of
the Rourkea on the local ground this
. season. The first encounter was a I-to-I
contest with Dea Moines making a des
, perate elghtb-lnntng attack. The second
, was a -pitchers' battle In which Baker of
the eDs Moines staff registered a noe
, hit game and then lost when his team
mates threw It away. The final score at
the end of seven Innings was 1 to 0.
The lone score of the second contest
came In the fourth round and was made
without a hit. With one down, Forsythe
drew a pass and Wells reached first In
the same manner. Graham tried to catch
Forsythe at second and overthrew the
ball, Forwythe going to 'third. Ewoldt
tried to nab Wells the same way and
overthrew, Forsythe scoring. Wells went
on to third, but was caught
Oae Hit For Reerkes.
The only hit made by Omaha was In
the third Inning. It was registered by
Schliebner. The rest of the contest was
an elegant slab duel between Blodgett for
Omaha and Baker for the locals.
Omaha clinched the first game In the
third Inning when a three-run lead
proved to be sufficient. Three hits did
the business with an error thrown In by
way of consent from the Boosters.
' After Smith had filed In this round, R.
Breen singled, Forsythe was safe at first
and Breen took second on Sawyer's er
ror. It was Sawyer's only bobble, but the
fans attributed it to the fact that his
sale to the Washington Americans, an
nounced today, had been responsible.
Krueger filed, but Krug was there with
the mighty stick and his single scored
Breen, Forsythe taking third. Both
Forsythe and Krug counted on MeChes-
ney's single. The latter was nipped at
second trying to stretch his hit into a
double.
Rally Proves Faille.
Des Moines made a brave attempt to
overcome the lead in the eighth. With
two down Hahn singled and Jones
walked. North appeared nervous and a
wild pitch advanced the runners. Hart
ford's singles scored the two men. Saw
yer failed in the pinch and fanned for
the third out.
Ernie Krueger left tonight to join the
New York American league team, to

Saturday and Sunday the Stors and Ice
land's Chicago Giants will meet for their
second and final series of the season at
Rourke park. Saturday's game will be
called at 2 o'clock and Sunday's contest
will start immediately after the Kohout

have been the biggest crowd that ever
saw a base ball game filled the Braves'
field to overflowing at Its opening to
day. The locals, who took advantage of
the occasion to raise the blue and gold
pennant won in the world series with the
Philadelphia Athletics last year, de
feated St. Louis, 8 to L
According to official estimates, the
crowd numbered between 46,000 and 47,000
persons. Of this number S2,(VX) were paid
admissions. The seating capacity of the
stands Is 4.1,600 and thousands stood
inrougnout the game, other tnouaands
were turned away.
The flag raising was participated In
by President Tener . of the National
league and many of the club owners, by
the members of both teams and by
Mayor Curley.
Loving cups and flowers were pre
sented President Gaffney and the mayor.
Clark Griffith, manager of the Wash
ington Americans, pitched the first ball, a
strike, to Manager Stalllngs of the
Braves. The game itself was an Inter
esting one, in which Boston gained an

lieved to have held more Important po
litical offices than any other negro.
He hss held all the highest offices 'in tha
United Brothers of Friendship.
Captain Tandy was bom a free negro,
his father, John Tandy, having purchased
his freedom for 11,000, which ho hed ac
cumulated by extra work done mostly
at night. Ha was born in Lexington,

Captain Tandy secured an education for
himself by his own labor. In conversa
tion he refers proudly to the fact that
he Is respected for his high character
by white men and negroes In many states
who are acquainted with him.
