HARD LUCK TALE OF GOLF
What Happened to Sam Reynolds
Once Upon a Time on Friday
the Thirteenth.
COUNTS 17UTE AT HOLE THIRTEEN
On Friday, th thirteenth of some
month or other several years ago, Sam
Reynolds had some of th hardest luck
be has ever had alnce he took up the
game of golf. Ha was playing; at the
Field club, and waa out after a club
record for th course. II had started
off brilliantly, getting a. two on jone, a
three on two. a four on three, a four
on four, and so on all of the outside
nine. They were played In th atart
lingly low acore of 34, and Sam waa
highly elated.
Ha then proceeded to go after th In
side, and started off Just aa fast. Ten
was parsed up with a three, eleven went
by with three. Twelve drew a two, and
again Sara smiled, and pulled up his
knickerbockers preparatory to making a
one or a two or at least a thre on thir
teen. But he failed to think of the aw
ful combination that he waa working
agalnat.
To attempt to play th thirteenth hale
on Friday, the thirteenth, should be
agalnat the club rules, but Sam addressed
his ball with all th confidence of a
German army about to attack a Russian
position. H carefully picked out his
best driver. II glanced confidently down
the course; and then h took a swing at
the ball. Blng! It sailed off of th tee.
and rose gracefully into the ethertal blue
Higher and higher it soared, and as it
soared it cut a graceful curve to th
right. It cut almost a semi -circle, and
fell in th gravel roadway that crosaes
the course.
The caddy; found It, but It waa fully
two Inches beneath th surface of th
ground, embedded in a tiny mudhole that
was by the roadside. ' Sam approached,
and grasped his niblick firmly. A mighty
blow resounded through th neighbor
hood, and when the mud bad ceased
flying the ball still showed dimly some
what beneath the surface. Another try.
and then another, until finally the ball
responded to a particularly bard one and
rolled out upon th graas.
When th pill had finally been coaxed
Into the hole on the thirteenth green,
after three putts, Sam began to total up
th number of strokes the hole had cost.
Nine stroke he had taken, and when he
added his score up at the eighteenth
hole he found to hi Infinite disgust, that
he had a miserable 76, Instead of the 68
or 68 he had every tight to expect
"But who," asks Sam, "can play the
thirteenth hoi In leas than nine on Fri
day, th thirteenth V
