4 B THE OMAHA SUNDAY IKK: JULY 13, OMATIA SUNDAY IJKE: JULT 1910. CHARLEY WHITE AT FRONT Talk of Some of the Eing Work thit He Hu Been Doing; with Welsh in the Past KOW WANTS A LONGER BOUT By RITfOPinR. KKW TORK. July 17.-Oharley TOtti win mora la th ubjwet, for Charley White now buki In the pi'RUIstlc cal cium as th result of hla uncontrovertible ten-round victory ew Champion rreddt Welsh several csre ago. Befor that battle White Imparted to the writer that ha did not think It prob able that ha could knock Welwh out within the ten rounds. "It wtlt taka at surerhuman lightweight to put Welsh away In such a abort bout," raid White. "Freddie la without doubt the greatest defensive fighter no, ha la not a fighter, but a boxer In the a-ame today. I'm taking thla bout on merely to show how eloee to a knockout I could come If we ever were scheduled to go twenty rounds." After the contest White asserted,' "See, how nearly I came to stowing Freddie away? Three time during tha ten rounds X oould see myself the new light weight champion of tha world; but earn time tha chance slipped away. Twice I overbalanced myself when about to de liver what might hare been a knockout, and tha other time Welsh fell Into a clinch and pressed my gloves to his sides with hla arms so that I could not even pull them away from him until tha cob weba in hla head cleared. Willi Twrslr Ronli. Those who saw that fight will agree with me that I would have an excellent chance of . retrieving the lightweight championship to America If Welsh woull only agree to take ma on In a twenty round match. 'Thafe all I shall ever ask of Welsh a fight over ten rounds. It need not necessarily be to a referee's decision, for a knockout Is more convincing than a referee's opinion, and I sincerely believe I could knock out Welsh within fifteen rounds. "I know I shall newer get tha oppor tunity of meeting Welsh over tha Derby route, unless publlo sentiment forces Welsh Into eucli a match. It Is up to true Americana who desire to see the title restored to this good old United Btates to Insist upon Welsh meeting me over a distance. I say thla with no deelrs to be egotistical, but wish to place a fact before tha public." Caaaot Evade Match. "Welsh cannot evade this match," Inter polated Nate Lewis, White's manager. "I have received offers from no less than a half doien different promoters for an other Welsh-Whit match, Boston, Mil waukee. Denver, New Orleans, Kansas City and New York are In the field for this match and Denver la willing to give Welsh hla price for a twenty-flv-round bout with White. W nearly had Freddie for a long mile In Denver, but ha Is) as slippery In his match-making as ha Is In tha ring, and ho wriggled out of It. Mis loophole was . that tha promoters would not give him tha extra $2,600 ha .demanded. I agreed to make good tha difference, aund tha bout Seemed clinched, but when tha Brighton Beach offer cams Freddie mad haste to get that no-decision affair. "However, I still have hopes of White and Welsh getting together on Labor day. It's a fight over ten rounds that White desires, and deserves," California Is still hopeful that pro fessional boxing will be resurrected shortly. Marty Fork Ins, ona-tlma man ager of Eddie McOoorty. who has Just returned from tha coast Is authority for this statement. Daw for Camas; 1 Law. According to Mr. Forklnu tha fight solons are eagerly awaiting tha next meeting of tha legislature so that a new boxing measure can be Jammed through. Whether boxing returns on the Paolflo coast la wholly up to Jim Coffroth "Bunny Jim" who has handled mora championship ring affairs thsn any man connected with tha game. Coffroth has become a powerful political factor, an1 It Is ha who will make tha fight for the restoration of tha old sport on tha other side of ths Rockies. Mike Gibbons Is enjoying an enforced vacation over the torrid months. Tha St. Paul Shroud, Is nursing a ooupla of splintered ribs received In his bout with Leo Houck. The enterprising manager of Boldler Bartfleld has tried to create tha Im pression that Bartfleld was tha one responsible for denting Mike's ribs, but i have Michael's word for it that llouck l.ifllcted tha damage and wa string with ? July lT.-The horse Is to be saved by the revival of racing, and saved Just at a time when It began to look aa If the .horse would be wiped out of existence. When the racing game got a body blow In many atatea a number of years ago, many of the greateat breeding stables In the country ceased operatKma. Th death rate among horses of the thor oughbred kind soon became almost double that of the birth rate. And then came the European war, demanding and get tingour horses, which removed from this country nearly 600,00ft horses In a few months time. Where Life of Here le Short. "During; the first fsw months of tha European wsr we sent to Europe about tn.VO.m worth of horses." said F. K. Bturgls, rlc chairman of the Jockey olub of New Tork. "Practically "every horse we sent over was for cavalry use, and that meant tliat the tttrsee were of the thoroughbred standard. The averasre Ufa cf a hora on a battlefield Is only ten dare, so It will be seen from tbls that If the breeding of horses hadn't been re sumed In this country Just at tha time Chat It was, the racing horse would al most hav been extinct before the Eu ropean war is over. No accurate report of the number of horses killed in tho war haa been received, but It Is safe to say that tha number runs well Into th millions." Revival of RartasT. Trobably It was the European war and Its consequent wastage of horeea that awakened tho horse lovers to the horse le peril that confronted them. But the revival of the racing game has done much to Influence breeders to resume opera tions sgaln, and In every state most of the old breeding farms have been re sumed again, and some new ones have come to lire. In New Tork Stat such fine sports men as John Madden, Harry Payne Whitney, August Belmont, Captain Cas- satt, R T. Wilson. Jamea Butler and Alexander Cochran hav done everything lit their power to help th breeding and th racing game. They have donated large sums to make racing possible In New Tork state, and because racing has been made possible there th breeders have become encouragd and have re-erv- tered th breeding bualneaa with seat. a. tart In Breeding; Pirmi, Several breeding farms recently started In New Tork state are competing for priies In the breeding line, Enthuslaatla horse lovers throughout tho state hav donated prises that are to be awarded annually to tha breeders who hav th most foals. But th breeding Industry has become nation wide and It Is expected that on of th results will be th foaling of soma The LI as It. I can't believe my orbs," ha orted. '1 oan't believe 'tis true." And then he swore a bitter curse. "With all thla world I m tnrougn. "I'm going out to Join my wife at Venice, and Incidentally to give a new member of the Welsh firm th up and down. It's uon other than Freddie City and I've yet to see him," said Fred Welsh, Jr. He was born at Bait Lako with a proud smile. "When it cam to naming htm my wlfe'a family held quit a caucus. In her religion It Is not th custom to nam a boy after a living member of the family. He must be called after some departed member. It looked for a while as If they were going to call him Abraham Welsh. I tried that over several times, and as It didn't seem to trickle off th tongue as I would Ilk It. I sent in my vote for Freddie. And so the future prune minister of England is labeled." .
