Steel waa again the central figure of
the stork market today, advancing to 89,
a maximum gain of 14V At Its dosing
Price of s7. It showed a net gain of 12S
or a total ot 3S from tho low of last
Frldav. In exactly four weeka the atock
has advanced about 35 points and the
entire outstanding capital Issue, par
value. 31 l.9iw.onn. lias changed hands sev
eral times over.
Dealings In Bethlehem Steel today were
larger than In any other Issue, aggregat
ing about vi.nOn shares Aside from tne
popular belief that a larger short interest
had been put to rout, no explanation for
the further rise was forthcoming, mere
were rumors of a contest lor the control

Officer Jacob Small, for many yeara
the terror of South Omaha toughs, has
resigned from the police force following
some trouble with the Fire and Police
Board It Is said. He handed Ills badgi
to Captain Henry Carey Saturday night,
after he had heard that the board was to
file charges and try him.
Some days ago Small arrested Charles
Remcr 11 nd later a aaloonman named
King. King runs a saloon at Twenty
fourth and Q streets and Small Is said
to h:tve charged him with keeping a dis
