CHICAGO. March 8 Although wheat
advanced most of the time today on ac
count of liberal export sales. th market
at the close was weak owing to assertions
that the entire Argentine surpliiM lor 1IU
Pad been purchased by Orcat Britain.
Gains were narrowed to lVdOo. com
pared with last nlght'a level. Corn finished
l'ktii'iC to 'c uli and oats al a rise
of l'c.
word of the supposed huge trsnsrer or
Argentine wheat was nol verified, but
received enough credence to bring about
extensive profit taking by longa In the
last half hour of the session.
What chiefly gave countennm-e to tho
report was an earlier announcement that
the British government hail wlgliln the
lust few weeks taken over the control
of mom than a score of big ocean ves
sels. A sharp selbHck today In prices
at Winnipeg was also thouaht to bu
significant of some remarkable develop
ment. Kuropean buying of rash wheat In the
Pnited rUHtca today was estimated at
1,000,000 bushels. The amounts taken at
Chicago and Kansas City brought rela
tively the highest premiums yet as com
pared with the current price of the May
delivery. In every direction, domestlu
country offerings proved snmll
Corn showed strength throughout the
day, yielding only a little, while wheat
turned weak. Fresh export sales of 200,000
200,000 bushels at the seaboard much to
do with giving prices a lift and so also
did a noticeable falling off In Chicago
receipts. Kuropean demand for oats a
peared to tie aa urgent as ever, Chicago
handlers were known to have sold 600,000
bushels at the seaboard had much ot
signs that the real total was a good deal
more.
Despite some liquidating sales varly In
provisions, the market wound up firm.
On the decline shorts and Investors took
hold quite freely. v

eral run the market opened at a aeaaon-
able hour and about tnree cars or red
western lambs sold to ship at $8.65, and
in the nelahborhood of uO head sold to
shear and feed at $860, alt prices being
strong. Outalde of the early trade busl-
nnas dragged along until late In the tore-
noon, with the Bulk 01 ins lambs still
unsold. Sellers stood pat for steady
prices, whPe the packers did their best
to fill orders on a lower basis. Finally
a clearance waa msde with ths general
trade ateady tc lo16c lower on lambs
snd about steady on aged aheep, which
consisted largely of ewes. Trade was
more uneven than for some time back,
making It hard fur sellers to do business.
An outstanding feature of today's trade
aas the fact that the local receipts of
17.000 hesd exceeded those al Chicago by
about 1.0U0 head.

the bis kinds, standing fifteen hands
high and upward, showed some Improve
