Dec 21.-Swift diminishing of stocks of wheat, both in the visible supply and In first hands, brought prices up today with a whirl. Heavy profit taking followed and the close was unset tled but j$o to IS above Saturday night. Corn rose hi&c Oats finished c off to Ac sdvance. and nroviatnna with gains of 15fll7tto to 27Hc Highest quotations so far this season were reached on cash wheat and the De cember delivery. The advance in the May option has been less speedy and at the top flgurea today that month was still 4Wc under the record of September 6, when there was an excited temporary bulge to $1.82. The fact that some widely known speculators were generally be lieved to be taking a leading part tn the buying today had considerable to do with the uplift in prices, but apparently more attention was grven to the falling off In the United States visible supply total and to estimates Indicating that the amount of wheat yet on the farms waa a good deal smaller than had been generally sun Posed. At no time today was there any evidenoe of bear pressure on wheat. On the other hand, exporters seemed decidedly averse, for the time being at least, to follow the advance. In some quarters it was even asserted that the upturn had led to a distinct pause In the European demand. Corn sympathised with the strength of wheat. TI.e corn bulls, though, were, handicapped by the fact that the stock pa hand In Chicago had been greatly en larged in the last week, and that the domestic visible supply total had also been swollen. Trade In oats seemed to bo chiefly of a local character. Many hold ers took a hand at sales to realise. Commission house buying hoisted pro visions. This was especially tho case after It wsa learned that packers here were accepting hogs freely at full prices despite large arrivals. The light run as a matter of course was due to the severe break in prices last wek and other markets wore also moderately supplied. As a result of tho meager ofterlngs there was more or less Improvement in prices at all points. Locally killing tattle of all kinds were around lf6i26c higher,' desirable kinds as a rule being 35o better than thf low point last week. StOckers and feeders did not break so much last week as fat cattle and they possibly did not show as much ad vance today, but ars safely 10ul5c higher. It would be well for the country to thor oughly understand that today's advance not only at thla point but at all other points as well was due to the extremely light receipts. Blame Cat for Wreck And Put it to Death HAN DIEGO. Cal., Dec. 1L-Ths black cat. blamed by the crew of tho big freighter Isthmian for tho mishap which nearly sent tha big boat to the bottom of the sea, was summarily executed Fri day night and ths body was thrown over board. Tho cat was picked up by a sympathetic seaman. In the freight yards at San Pedro, and taken aboard the Isthmian as a pot. Tho man, who packed tho cat aboard, bad not been going down to ths sea In ships long enough to be com lm bued with the superstition of tho average deep-water man and felt no fear when he ascended the gangway with the cat snuggled under his coat. It was only when the Isthmian struck that tho cat was discovered, sitting on one of ths after hatches. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET New Minimum Quotations for South ern Group of Roads. MONEY RATES ARE EASIER, Roads Derelop Declining; Tendency on rsxceedlnaly Llajht Offerings ' Total Co lea, Par Talae, 1,3K,OftO. NKW YORK, Dec. 21.-Ruch hopeful In ferences as the financial district maV have drawn from last week's rate decision granting eastern rsilroads a peneml freight advance were largely nullified or set nslrle torisy when It became known that the Pennsylvania public service com mission had ordered a draetlc reduction In coal freight rates between some of? the important anthracite centers and 1 hlliiilclphln. While officials of the roads most con cerned professed to regard th decision as entirely local In extent, speculative all street evidently rhosc to aocept it In a lees favorable spirit. This was re flected In persistent selling of Reading snd Ihlgh Valley sharps, which fell to new low prices for the present move ment In the final hour the Hat was subjected, to further unsettlement and lower prices. The decline wsa led by Unite 1 States Steel, which had held a fraction ahovo fifty despite continued offerings, soma of them being In blocks of l.flOO share' or mure. Steel finally fell to 49H, or exactly 1 above Its minimum figure. It wss regarded as significant of mar ket conditions that the committee which controls prices on the exchange deemed it expedient to establish new minimum quotations for the southern group of roads, Including Atlantic coast line, Louisville and Nashville, seaboard pre lerred nnd Southern railway common and preferred. As a matter of fact there has been no recent trading In theso stocks, most of which have tintergna dividend revision during the closure of the exchnmte and since Its reopening. In the course of the day's business, which wss far below normal, some of the equipment shares and Hethlehem Steel preferred showel slsms of demand aft slightly higher prices, but this group fell hack with the entire list at the close, which was weak. Much of th day's news was of hope ful tenor. Money rates were easier, aomo spocial thlrty-dsy loans being msde at 8Vt per cent. Kxchange on London fell to Its lowest quotations since, last Feb rusry on an over abundance of offerings. lVonds developed a declining tendency, on exceedingly light offerings.
