7 cars all told being reported In. This
leaves the total for the two days this
week at 10,718 head, the smallest of an
recent week, and smaller than a year
ago by over 4,000 head. One reason foi
the moderate receipts may be due to the
holding back In the country of feed
ers, which are In very , poor demand
at the present time. Thus the actus, re
ceipts of cattle are limited very largely
to killing stock.
Desirable beef steers that Just hsp
pened to appeal to buyers were steady
this morning and sold .with ressonaoie
freedom. On the other hand all beef
CHttie were slow and hard to move, with
the feeling a little lower If anything. No.
Stockmen who were expecting a mosti
urgent demand for beef cattle on ac-
count of the closing of the Chicago yards JJ
have thus far been disappointed, as the
demand has been little if any more than JJ"
normal. This may be accounted for In e!
part by the enormous receipts at Kansas 57
1 liy yesterday, that market having been,
swamped with killers. ' i.
Cows and heifers were In fair demand 18.

yesterday, and the greater part of the
offerings of butcher stock changed hands
In reasonable season.
The supply of feeders and stock cattle
was very limited, but no more so than
the demand. The quarantine established
by the local authorities In many of the
western states has limited the territory
to which shipments of feeders can be
made, so that the demand is consequently
restricted. There was a little buying
this morning, and the prices paid were
possibly in spots a little stronger than
yesterday, but it was limited largely to
filling of orders. In other words, there
was almost no speculative buying of
either stockers or reeders.

big bulk of the supply finally moved
values were steady, or very nearly so,
putting the average trade on a rather
uneven, b-it generally steady basta.
Movement was far from l.vely at any
time, but a pretty fair clearance was
made In good season. Bulk of the sup
ply moved at $7.4ttif7.t. with tops at 7.7fc
This figure Is a nickel better than yes
terday's top, but this was due more to
the difference In quality than to anv Im
provement In the trade. Pigs were In
fair supply, and while most buyers failed
to take much Interest In them, prices re
mained about the same as on Monday,
The market this wek has been a most
uncertain proposition. Monday's run
was so light that shippers were able to
take nearly the whole supply, and this
fset ws largely responsible for the 16o
advance recorded. Today with a larger
run values held firm and no more, so
that for the two days the market shows
a gain of anywhere from a dlnin to as
much as 20c. Considering- the fact that
the supply has been so very moderate, the
quality has been remarkably good, and
this accounts In a measure for the abil
ity of shippers to compete with the pack
ers on nearly everything that shows up.

yesterday's top. the sorting In most cases
was a little lighter and yesterdav's top
was a more popular price today. Value
were generally regarded at least steady
to a dime higher. Lambs sold all the
way from 8S.60 to $9.80 for the most of
them. As was tho case on Monday the
packers cut into the feeder supply, and
If some of the sales of this class were
taken Into account lambs showed more
advance than wss generally quoted. The
bulk of the offerings consisted of fed
westerns.
The most interest seemed to center In
the aged sheep today, especially was this
the case with fat yearlings. Two double

manufactured at the Union Stock Yards
has been found to be Infected with germs
of the foot and mouth disease and two
plants making the remedy today were
closed by Dr. Samuel E. Bennett, "chief
of tho federal Inspectors In the district.
All tho virus on hand, worth about $30,000
was condemned. Seventy-five Inspectors
were detailed to visit all farms to which
the virus has been shipped since Octo
ber 1.
Suspicion that the serum was Infected
was aroused when the hoof and mouth
disease broke out in localities where no
cattle, sheep or hogs had been shipped
from the Union Stock Yards. Hogs were
