were more or less discouragel yesterday
because of the action of the market,
losses were shown In futures of IS a 20.
In addition to the absence of buying
power for the cash article, the sales
being only 126.uk) bushels to millers, there
were liberal hedging sales nut only here
but In tiie northwest against the wheat
that is to come forward. Nc, York re
ported the cancellation of twenty boat
loads, and on Una wheat the exporter la
said to have had a loss. The export
situation Is discouraging at the moment
and ther is little likel hood of any Im
provement in the cash maraet In I he next
week or ten days. It then. Russia Is to
again become a, shipper of breadstuffs lo
(ileal Britain, and iheae shipments will
head off the wheat coming from farmers
of the I'nited Mates, and whlc.i haa al
ready been sold 40 go abroad.
Many of those who bought wheit fu
tures recently In the market were on the
selling side In a liberal way yesterday.
While Liverpool was hltiher. the response
to the advance on Wednesday waa feeble.
The spring wheat markets, which wuie
strong, for several days, were weak yes
terday with sharp price loases for lh
day. One message from Minneapolis said
that farmers were not sailing wheat
lieciy on. the decline, while another re
ported offerings as oh the increase.
Corn futures were dragged lower yes
terday by the weakness in wheat. The
market ruled fractionally higher at one
lime during the session, but resting spots
were V8'o under yesterday's final fig
urea, 'i here were general rains In the
corn belt, heavy in some place, and
cooler weather prevailed practically all
over this territory. However, there was
buying yesterday by speculators who sold
spots Wednesday, and It was the popular
belief that rains came too late In many
sections to help the crop. It waa re
ported that corn was being cut for fodder
In many Kansas counties, and the Rock
Island report calls the Kansas corn crop
a half one with the blades drying up
without ears on the stalks.
The disposition of seaboard people to
back away from the cash oats after the
heavy buialnesa of Wednesday waa one of
the depression far tors In the future mar
ket Thursday. There was also further real
ising of an Important sort and the weak
ness In other pits likewise had lis effect.
Resting spots were He lower for the day.
Cash oats were offered to the seaboard
at iic under the previous day's figures,
but no local export business waa reported
and cash sales totaled only Uo.OOO bush
els. Bids here for export were st stiff
prices, but only Immediate shipment was
wanted. Baltimore reported the sale of
cargo of oats yesterday to Liverpool.
Wheat was lc lower.
Corn was Uc higher to Ho lower.
Oats were unchanged to Vc higher.
Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 1,419,000 bushels; corn, 2 Ooj
bushels; oats, 242.000 bushel.
Wheat at Liverpool closed d lower;
corn, unchanged, nominal.
Pilmary wheat receipts were 1,600,000
bufhels and shipments l.lTS.OiiO Iniahels,
against receipts of 1.015. 00 bushels and

A TTI.K-Receipts were very light this
morning, only twenty-four cars being re
ported In. Thla was really not enough
to make a market, but It was fortunate
that receipts were light, na requirements
of packers were veiy amn.ll. The high
prices that have prevailed all the week,
together with the large decrease In the
consuming demand at the big eastern
centers of population, has created a very
weak feeling In the market. Packers
everywhere have undoubtedly made up
their minds that the market will be
lower next week, and no one was anxious
to buy cattle today unless they could vet
them at a sufficient reduction to make It
an objert to buy them. Thus It happened
that the market not only here, hut prac
tically all other points was reported as
slow and weak, with the tendency of
prices on all kinds of killers sharpy
lower In spite of the fact that receipts
were everywhere light.
There were no good to choice cornfed
heevna here to test the market, but the
feeling on that kind Is steady. On the
other hand, medium to pretty decent corn
feds are UpiVi lower than last week,
with western i arose steers generally Ita
lower.
Cows and heifers have been easing off
and are fully 3fo lower for the week.
Btockere and feeders, which were very
strong at the beginning of the week, have
eased off lately and are l&tj2oc lower than
last week with medium kind 2Ac or more
lower.

up this morning, and with values re
ported lower at all other points the local
trade opened very dull, and first bids
were all of 10lfo lower. Hhlpplng demand
was very light today, and the few hogs
sold to shippers were anywhere from fully
10o off on the early saloa to as much as
164T20C lower In the case of some of the
later ones.
The lightness of the shippers' pur
chase was an added point In favor of
the packers, and with almost the total
supply at their disposal they refueed to
better their early bids to any great ex
tent. As a result the trade dragged along
through the greater part of the forenoon,
but In the end sellers had to accept a big
dime decline, and It was on this basis
that the big end of the offerings was
sold. Movement remainod slow from start
to finish, and It was late In the forenoon
before anything like a clearance waa
made.
The big end of the saloa was made at
IS Mi. with a quotable bulk of Is 75434.14.
There was. of course, a sprinkling of good
hogs on up the line, lops selling a high
as V lo. At Hie close of Thursday's trade
values were within a shade of being
steady with tue close of last week, but
today's decline leaves the week a market
all of H 15c lower, and shipping hugs
look at least 16c off, while tops show a
Hat 2' decline
rUipplles today were estimated at 123
cars, or K.Vio head, bringing the total for
tho week up to 34,1:3 head. This Is a
gam of more than H.SoO head over a week
ago, and Is over 6,000 heavier than for the
orrexponuing periou a year ago.

CHICAGO, Aug. 21. The cereal mar
kets advanced today and all closed
higher, Vm to 21c; corn, to lc, and
oats S to IV- Provisions averaged
slightly higher.
In wheat the feature was the narrow
ing of the Bept ember-December spread tJ
a dlffeience of 4a as compared with fcc .
at the close of yesterday. The market
waa strong all day but the volume ot
trade was light Factors In the strength
were the demand for flour and strength
of northwestern markets. The close waa
about half a cent under the top. Winter
wheat receipts were reported decreaalng;
seaboard clearances were large. Argen
tine, Austrian and east Indian shipments
were half what they were a year ago.
The corn advance waa baaed on sym
pathy with wheat and oate. rather bull
ish crop reports, limited country offer
Inns and reiKirts of export bids. The
volume of business was small. There
was a large trade In oats on the resump
tion of export bids. Cash and commis
sion houses headed the buying while a
