about to open its doors after a summer re
cess, and inviting us to come and partake
of that which may serve to make us for

of the real world in the fun and folly of
the mimic. It Is with some modesty, too,
that the manager makes his bow this
year of grace. Hitherto he haa come
with something of pride, and has dis
played his wares with a confidence that
bred In him at deast assurance; now he
haa felt the chastening rod of adversity to
a degree at least, and It Is with less of
certainty and more of wlstfulnesa he asks
us to attend and enjoy the things ha haa
prepared. Let ua hope ha haa that which
will merit attention, for aurely now. If
ever, the world needs the theater. If only
for the diversion It affords.
In Omaha tha situation la unchanged,
and ,the activities will resume lust
where they left off last spring. At the
Brandeis Joy Sutphen will b In charge,
representing locally tha managing firm

charming comedy-drama, very popular
in New York last season and Jhe season
before, Is to be presented, opening on
September 6. Both the Orpheum and
the Gayety announce their opening bills
for next Sunday; the Orpheum will show
Arnold"Daly In O. B. S.'s one-act comedy,
"How He Lied to Her Husband,' and a
bill of merit otherwise; the Gayety to
swing into line with Ed Lee Wroth and
his "Ginger Grls." The Empress will
continue the even tenor of Its way. un
interrupted. The Krug will very likely
continue dark; reports haive come from
the east that the American la to be In
habited by the "Progressive" burlesque,
but no local announcement to that effect
has yet been made,
"As allck as a new pin," said Man
ager Johnson of the Oayety theater when
asked what condition that popular play
house would be in when It ia opened next
Sunday for the regular seaaon ot musical
burlesque. The Gayety Is undergoing Its
annual house cleaning which in this in
stance means much fresh paint, new
moquette carpet In certain sections of
the house, the walla thoroughly cleaned
and the fresco decoration touched up
where needed. Although the auditorium
proper and the fronts of the boxes al
ways have been well Illuminated, the

cent through the instalation of hundreds
of mazda lamps ot greater efficiency than
the carbon lampa to be discarded. On tha

footlights. A brilliantly lighted stage has
always been Manager Johnson's hobby
and It was claimed by the companies
.playing the Gayety that even last sea.
