"I have good reasons for saying so," he is quoted. It would be almost too good to 1 be true to find that what Chance hinted at was Murphy's retirement. As show ing the Intensity of feeling against i Charles Webb Murphy, we quote this ! from the Sporting News, the national ' organ of base ball: It cannot be denied that Mr. Murphy Is good copy" and, therefore, newspaper writers can hardly be blamed for airing I him though every such airing taints the national game as long as there Is no , general understanding and observance oi a rule that he shall . be absolutely Ignored, and that nothing he may say or do shall be given publicity even at "objectionable advertising" rates. That Wight to get under the thickest of hides. And that Just about represents j the bag ball public's attitude toward j Murphy in his persecution of Chance, t his humiliation of his entire team, and i ' vicious assaults upon McGraw, Tyncn ' and others. Manager Chance says Mur phy has never shown any respect for Kim nf thfk nlavra . Avcant wlian tlia Cubs were winning. Chance' has man aged the team for seven years, winning four pennants, finishing seoond three ' times and taking two world's champion i ships. McGraw, called the "Napoleon of base ball." has run the Qlants ten years, winning four pennants, one world's championship, aspiring to a second and finishing below second several times. Of course, had Chance won bIx pennants and six world's series and lost the sev enth. It probably would have been the same with Murphy that is, he woula havs been the same Murphy. Leopards do not change their spots. But, as the Sporting News says, it would be a great thing for base ball If it were rid of him. The big world's series between the New York Giants and Boston TFted. Sox begins Tuesday, and If anybody has an Inside line on - the outcome we would be glad, to bava 1C , Many-1 sensible - men hay refused to attempt to forecast th,e result of - such contests. ..History has shown that,, as Christy. MathewMa ay,s, so. many stars of the game go tyring; in these pivotal campaigns as to .leave the whole thing In the realm o, ure , conjecture, . It will be remembered! how sadly disappointing Ty Cohb and Sam Crawford were in. their famous hit and run play against the Cubs and how Ty managed only to bat up to , .200 in 1907 contest Eddie Collins of the .Athletes last year took a back seat, while 3ak3r starred in -the series, wun isew lur. f And 80 it goes, wnue men nue juuv ; jon and there are very few such -al- ,ways may be relied on, yet it sijems to I be even their fate now and then to fall i down in world's championships, whin some " less seasoned "and '. conspicuous playef may shine. The most notable to il .f.nra nt hiM sort:''' perhaps, was the I phenimenat work of Rone for the White Sox irt 1906 against the Cubs. Ho was the fielding and batting wonder of the series, whereas he had been a mediocre before and never played In major base ball after. Our Judgment is, if both GlanU and Bed Sox are at themsilvos, that this is going to be an exceedingly close contest, with odds slightly in favor of the Giants. . ' ! Miller Huggins probably is to succeed Hank O'Day as manager of Cincinnati poor little Miller. Huggins is a great second baseman, a great ball player, In fact, and may make a good manager. He has played with Cincinnati before and all' that, and Garry Herrmann is said to have kicked himself for ever. letting him get away from him, but, neverthe less, we must sigh and say, poor little . Miller. Poor anybody who attempts to manage a ball team in Cincinnati, the town ef brickbats and hammers, , Why, the fans are worse than Charles Webb Murphy when it comes to demanding a " nr for every game. Seriously, though, O'Day will leave Huggins V a a-ood team, the nucleus of a winner, and Huggins, with any sort of support. should pull up strong in mi. ZWM1G THE BEST BATTER Finishes the Season in First Place, with an Average of .352. KANE MAKES GREAT RECORD Omaha's First Sucker Takes Over l,50O Chances and Makes Bat Twenty-Six Errors HUsks -l the Best Twtrler. Final averages for the 1912 season of the Western league show ZwtUIng of fit. Jo seph leading the. league In batting, twilling hit the ball at a .352 chp for the entire season. Thomason was Omaha's heaviest slugger, hammering the ball for an average of .534. Coyle was second with .m and Kane third with .220. Nlehoff batted .29$ for the season and Johnson Danny Murphy, captain and right fielder for the Athletics, is disabled oy a bad lea and useless as a player. Connie Mack holds him on the pay roll, though, for scout duty. Remember when Stetn felfs leg failed him, i what happened to Rtelnv after his noble part in mawng the Cubs world beaters for so long? He didn't even get an unconditional re lease, much less a reservation. He ' was sold, like a youngster who had failed to make good, and without any option in his place of transference. But he wan working for C. Webb Murphy, not Cornelius McGillicuddy." Andreas goes back to Des Moines In exchange of Claire. Red was one of the main spokes in the Des Moines team when it was winning pennants and he has a lot of good ball playing in him yet . .' : Mathewson is dead safe In saying that the stars often shoot bad In .rorld's championship series. HJstory proves It In fielding Undsey, the Denver flrst sacker, took first honors and Jimmle of Ora&ha fourth. Kane took 1,644 chance during the season and made but twenty-six errors. His fielding average was, .963. In the pitching department Hicks managed to hCu oil grip on first place, winning twenty-one and losing five games. Denver led In team batting, with the Rourkes batting fourth. Lincoln had the best fielding team and Omaha was but two points behind, getting second place. The Rourkes led In stolen bases and sacrifioe hits.. For individual honors, Nlehoff starred In stealing bases, getting away with sixty-three bases, and Coyle made fifty-five sacrifice hits. Fol lowing are the figures for the entire sea son: Kane Shows Improvement. A glance at the final averages of the player's In the Western league brings to light many surprises In that the leaders of last rear In fielding are 'not around the top this year while some of the poor est players least season made a remark able showing this season. . ! Take for instance the record made by Jim Kane, Omaha's first Backer. Last season Kane landed about twelfth place at first base. This year he finishes the season in fourth place and took more chances than any other first baseman In the league. During the season Kane took a total of 1,346 chances. He had 1,425 put Outs, ninety-five assists and hut twenty six V errors. : Lindsay the leader of the league in fielding, took but 1,425 chances, or more than loO less than Kane. Tom Tennant, ' Sioux City's first baseman, is the only player "who could compare with Kane. , ' : Tennant Joined the giou- City team after the completion of the first month's play. Since that time he played. (n every tame and took a total of 1,486 chances. Both Kane nd Tennant are in a class by themselves. They do not hesitate to go after balls .which are way 'out of their reach, unlike some other first basemen in the league. No matter where the ball Is thrown Kane will make an attempt to get it. In most cases he gets the ball, but sometimes he falls. ; Schipke Shines. :-;'.,. Bill Schipke, Pa's clever second sacker, did not Join the team at the . start of the season, but at that he managed to out shine all ' the other second basemen with the - exception of .George Hughes of Wichita. Both these men ended with fielding average of .963, although Hughes took far more chances than the Skipper. At third base, the position which by many is considered the hardest position to field on a team, -Nlehoff of Omaha was by far the best fielder. Nlehoff took a total of 706 chances and It Is needless to say that a majority of these were far from easy chances. The star third base man had 220 putouts, 432 assists and fifty four errors for a fielding average of .924. Niesoff is a steady player and his work Is always clean and snappy. - Just the contrast of Nlehoff Is Lee Qulllin of Denver. - Quillin Is known all over the league as a record player. He is continually trying to make a record of some kind. He did it this year; that Is, he almost landed at the foot of all West ern league third basemen. Qulllin took but S17 chances during the season and out of this number mads fifty-one earrors. , Ealle Justice, the Omaha shortstop, was but four points behind Coffey, the Denver shortstop. Justice took a total of 789 chances for an average of .920, while Coffey took 798 chances for an average of .924. Including all the games of the season of 1912: Batting Averases. ' ' . AB. R, H.
