southern part of the state Investigating
the extent of damage wrought by the new
horse disease, has returned to Omaha.
While out he went through Thayer,
Nuckolls, Webster,, Franklin, Harlan,
Furnas, Red Willow,, Hitchcock and
Dundy counties. He Is unable to estimate
the total losses, but Is clearly, of the
opinion that they have been greatly over
estimated. According to his Ideas the
losses : have been heaviest among Hh
horses In pasture! The disease' l, now
dying out a .(. v.'
Of all the counties visited (he losses
were heaviest In Webster, where It Is
estimated . that more than- 2,(00 horses
died. Of this number the death of 1,600
can be traced to vaccination. When the
disease first broke out, a veterinarian
at Red Cloud claimed to have a cure und
used a vscclne that had cured blackleg
in cattle. He was kept busy night and
day, treating soma 1,809 horse, moat' of
which have since died. When the horses
vaccinated by Dr. Crelghton began . to
die off at & rapid rate the farmers be
came greatly exercised and threatened to
lynch htm and he suddenly left the coun
try. Mr. Eyler says the loss of horses has
not interferes with the plowing and (ow
ing of fall wheat, as much as has been
reported. Generally Ip the counties of the
southern part of the state the wheat is
all In, much of It up and the acreage fully
up to the normal. ' , '

Business and pleasure brought the Bur.
llngton men, but the others came Just
to see the sights. The Burlington officers
held a meeting at headquarters during
the day, at which they talked shop.

fullest extent, railroad officers have Is
sued an order that all. of the headquar
ters buildings will close at noon and re
main closed during the remainder of the

Is president of the state association and

Both said this was not a formal meeting
of the association, but that It was rather
an occasion upon, which the members

The state association has decided upon
a plan of maintaining a speakers' buueau,
from whlcn speakers on commercial club
topics will be furnished to clubs through
out the state. The bureau will ask each
club- thai la a member of the association
to furnish the name of one or more men
of its club familiar with commercial club
work. From this list the bureau will as
sign speakers to the clubs asking for
them. " :'

at various times for discussions of the
affairs f the organisation. One of the

working on Is a plan for a state bureau

the state, but as 'yet no' provision has
been made for getting these figures be

appointed a committee with William F.

to draft a tentative trill to be Introduced
R''the next , legislature' providing for an
appropriation for such a! publicity bureau
in order that the,, great resources of this
state might be. mHde known,, not only
to the people ot this statsbut to these
of every staff in the union.
The association will ' maintain ' "open
house," as Secretary McFaddan calls It,
at the Commercial club during the two
days the members will be here for Ak-Sar-Ben.
