OLD FAVORITES THE LOSERS Proof of Increased Freight Move ; mrnt la Went rraUa Mr Re daction la K anther of Idle Cars. NEW YORK, Sept. 21-On a volumne of business uncommonly large for a week-end, today's two-hour session ot the stock exchange added very mater ially In the advance of the preceedlns day. The movement was perhaps less broad than yesterdav's speculation, cen tering largely around the old time fav orites, such as United - States Steel which established another high recn-d for the year, Reading and Union Pacific. Lehigh Vallfy also rose smartly on ad vices pointing to excellent trade condi tions. This was shovn not only In the company's August, statement, with a net Increase of $2&,0u0, but in the un precedented demand for anthrlcite coal in the west gt higher prices. Steel was assisted by the higher price for pi? iron and certain finished pro ducts. Other industrials that manifested mtuked strength included General Elec tric' American Smelting and some of the meta shaves. In the -afteolal elass, American Tobacco moved irregularly and Goodrich prefer red lost pver points. Routine news was of a fivornble char acter. Proof of the increased freight movement in the west was furnished bv the great reduction in the number of idle cars compared with thl period last year. Trailing -In London and on the conti nental exchanges was much restricted by reason of the Jewish holiday, but Lon don was a moderate purchaser here. Bonds manifested some Improvement with large transactions in speculative Is sues. Total sales pur value, $1,350,000. united States 6s advanced per cent on call during the week. Corrifed cattle were exceptionally scarce all the week and have commanded good, strong prices. Common and Inferior corn feds have shown some weakness, as buy ers neglect that kind, preferring good grassers. Range beef cattle have been In good demand throughout the week and show very little change as compared with last week's close. Cows and heifers were active sellers during the first half of the week, but during the latter part eased off, becoming decidedly dull, with the pretty good kinds a little lower than last week. On the other hand canner and stocker cows con tinued in good demand throughout tl) week, with prices about steady. The market on good feeding steers was strong during the greater part of the week and current prices at the high point of the season. Good light Blockers were also good sellers, but common to medium light stuff was very slow throughout Uw week, being hard tp move on most days. HOGS Packers seemed to want a few hogs this morning and they wanted them so badly that they did not stop to haggle very long over tue price. The result was that ohces were l((Wl6c hlt'her and the trade very active at the: advance. The bulk of the very light receipts changed hands In auh 'a' short time that the flurry was over with almost as Soon bs It had started, leaving three or four cars still unsold, with four cars reported back to arrivn nn u Info tmln. After the Urgent orders wrc filled the market flattened out and a -good share of the eany ad vance was lost. The market this week has been the most changeable, of any experience In a long time. Shippers who nave cut a big figure In the trade for some time back have either been out of the market altogether or have been moderate buyers, with the result that packers were able to deal the market some hard blows. On Tuesday and Wednesday the market slumped badly, the decline for the two days amounting to over 33c on an aver age. During the latter half of the week It advanced rapidly tintll today prices are : In about tho eanie notches as at the close of last week, although the top la ; Srtlc lower owing to there being no choice hogs here toduy like the tops ot a week ago.
