Fnll Term WH1 Open Early In Month of September. .Doane college will open on Tuesday, September 10, for the year of school work in a splendidly equipped condition. In the academic department there will be no changes inthe teaching force, with the exception of the presidency, which position has not ben filled. In the music and expression depart ments Robert Dick, who has been violin end theory Instructor for ten years, takes the poMtion. Miss Jean Lindsay, who has been in the piano department for three years, will go to the head of that department, and Miss Arllne Aksamlt, a graduate of Doane conservatory, will be her assistant. Miss Lucile Reed will con tinue as vocal Instructor, and Miss Ge nevra Parker, a graduate of the Ott School of Expression at Chicago, who has ben doing recital and concert work for the last three years, will have charge of the expression department. The outlook for ,a good attendance at Doane this year Is very bright, "and a large freshman .class is expected. . Field Secretary Clark has been assisted by the Hlgby brothers, two students who have had experience In this kind of work. Prof. Fairchlld, acting president of the college, is spending a couple of weeks in his old home in Kentucky. Coach Johnson will soon be on the ground to make preparations for the foot ball squad. Ten Of last year's varsity squad will be ready to report when school opens. t Key to the Situation Beo Adver-ng. Plans for the Opening; of the Pali Term. The opening of Boyles college, in both Omaha and Council Bluffs, Is announced for Monday, September S. This school has been honored with the exclusive right to teach the use of that marvelous short and writing machine, the Btenotype. This new machine takes down dictation by the aid of mechanism as fast as a person talks. Enables one to write every word In the English language as fast as it Is dic tated, and write It in plain, clear, In stantly read typewriter type. Boyles college starts out the new year with one of the strongest faoultles ever brought together in the west Included in in (he faoulty are honor graduates of Harvard, Missouri university, Drake uni versity, Union Law college, Upper Iowa university, University of Wisconsin, Dan ville (N. T.) Normal, Indiana State Nor mal college, and many other notable in stitutions of learning. ' The record of the employment depart ment is Interesting and one of the most unique of any In the United States. This department has for its object the bringing together of employers and employes. The demand for competent workers Is far in excess of the supply and the employment department does not confine Its placing of employes to graduates of Boyles schools, while it does give preference to them. As a result during the month of July there were 297 requests for workers from various Individuals, firms- and corpora tions, and the college- placed 267 persons in these positions while forty places went unfilled for want of competent persons to take the places offered. The record for the month shows that of the 257 persons placed, dozens-of them were graduates of other colleges; some In OmaTia and others from various parts of the United States, while a majority of the places filled were In Omaha, yet they covered all parts of the west, and practically all lines ot trade and Industry, and a number of graduates from the Omaha High school were among the persons placed in posi tions. -Indications are-that at the fall term the attendance twill be larger than ever before, and that the number will take the combined course of stenography and ac counting will be larger than usual, while applicants for the night school are com ing In In increased numbers. ST. JOSEPH'S ACADEMY, OTTCMWA All Departments Ready for the Fnll Term. Situated about half a mile northeast of the city of Ottumwa, la., in the center of 125 acres of high, rolling land and some forests, St. Joseph's academy occu pies a location unsurpassed by any school In Iowa. The surroundings are most beautiful and picturesque, the air Is pure and invigorating, and the city Is near enough to- afford Urban conveniences amid rural surroundings. St. Joseph's academy Is 'conducted by Catholic sisters of the Order of Humility of Mary. There are eight departments primary, preparatory, . academic, normal, commercial, domestic science, musle and art. The scholastic year is divided Into two semesters of five months each, be ginning September 9 and February 1, re spectively, but pupils are received at any time. The course of study is thorough and practical and includes the following subjects: Christian doctrine, orthography, reading, elocution, penmanship, English, history, civics; economics, geography, mathematics, sciences, Latin, stenography and typewriting. i . . VOHK COLLKGE, YORK, NEB. In the collegiate department and In all departments a total of 461 adult students. besides ninety-three children In the model , scliool. There is no doubt about reach- j Ing the goul ut which the authorities ( are aiming. ! A SCHOOL FOR BACKWARD PUPILS ! Needed Opportunity for Mentnl nnd Physical Development. Oen of tho unique schools of the middle west is the Powell school at Red Oak, in., which Is devoted to the education and training of backward children. Being one of the unfortunate deficiencies of tho American educational systems In general and of the public school system In par ticular, that no adequate provision is made for pupils who are of other than normal physical and mental development, this school was established and Is con ducted to meet Just such needs. The school thus offers parents and guardians an opportunity to place their chargo3 In an environment where they are given every needed opportunity for healthful mental and physical growth, and where they will be free from all ambition-destroying Influences of unequal competi tion. The home Is both beautifully and healthfully located amid thirty acres of native park timber, supplied with pure spring water and provided with modern conveniences. In addition to the regular school work, the curriculum includes special articula tion work, manual training, domestic sci ence and physical culture. The tall term will be open September 2, with a good attendance, the number being limited In order that each pupil may receive Indi vidual attention, improvements have been made during the summer, and the school expects to enter upon the best and most successful year of work in Its history. ' NEBRASKA MILITARY ACADEMY Lincoln Institution Preparing for the School Term. The decorators have taken charge of i v.,nHr and have been busy painting lUO wutwiw walls and floors. Cleveland of Omaha, Charles Grebe of Portland, Ore.; Mrs. T. J. Gist president of the Ne braska Federation of Women's clubs, and C. B. Meshter of Lincoln. Cadet Nelsor. of Omaha, a student in the summer school, left for Omaha to Join his aunt, Mrs. C. N. Diets, for a trip through Yel lowstone National park. A. D. Myers, 'It was In town for the circus, coming from German town. Congratulations have been pouring In since" the announcement was made that George K. Bartlett would be commandant V.ita J ..... . i The library has been enlarged by a gift .ot nf books containing thirty-five volumes, the gift of C. N. Diets of Omaha. Another gift is a set ot natural nimuu-. Very flattering reports have been sent in from cadets in the state and it looks as though the attendance next year will break all previous records in the Ne braska Military academy. Educational Notes. The death rate from drowning adja cent rivers prompts the St. Louis Repub lic to urge teaching of swimming in tne public schools of that city. The cost of New York's city school plant is computed as $135,095,475 In the annual statistical report just lfsued by tbe Board of Education. The sum, which represents the total amount of money expended by the city since the i founding of its schools, for sites, buildings and equipment for school purposes, shows an increase of 8. per cent over the preced ing year. The figure falls far short of the actual value of the school plant how ever, since in making It up no account has been taken of the Increased valua tion. . 1 Foraerfr the Winona Seminary 0110, illtUgOta CONDUCTED BY THE SISTERS OF SAINT FRANCIS YEAR BEGINS FIRT WEDNESDAY IN SEPTEMBER C oiler confers decrees of B.
