STRATFORD, Conn., Aug. 15,-An at
tempt to pierce the center of the Blue
army, defending New York City, failed
this morning and for the time being the
enemy's advance was successfully
checked. Today's battle, although five In
fantry regiments and six troops of cav
alry were engaged, was only preliminary
to an approaching general engagement
which will Involve upwards of 15,000 men.
The two armies now face each other on
an eight-mile front, extending southeast
erly from Danbury, where the Blues have
their base. The first move forward by
the Red 1 expected to bring on a bat
tle, for both commanders are concentrat
ing their force at this point.

CLEVELAND. Aug. 14.-Artlcles were
signed here this afternoon for a match be
tween Johnny Kllbane, the featherweight
champion, of Cleveland, and Johnny Dun
dee of New York for ten rounds at 122
pounds, before the St. Nicholas Athletic
club of New York n the nlht of Sep
tember 4. Kllbane will get S3.5U0.

Omaha hospital at 6:30 o'clock last night

CHICAGO, Aug. 15.-Ch!cago today won
the opening gam of the aeries from New
York, 5 to 1, driving Marquard out of
the box In (he fifth and mowing down
New Ybrk's lead In the race for the Na
tional league pennant to five games. It
was estimated that 25,000 persons wit
nessed the contest. " Every available spot
n the grounds was occupied and thous
ands had to be denleti admission to the
park for the lack of space.
Marquard's finish came in the fifth in
ning. . With Archer out, Richie singled
and . Sheckard walked. Merkle got
Schulte's flyT Tinker drove a slashing
double Into the right field crowd, scor
ing Richie. Zimmerman sent a double
to the same spot, bringing Sheckard and
Tinker home. Leach singled to right,
scoring Zimmerman and raced to second
on Murray's throw to the plate. Ho
took third on a wild pitch. Baler walked,
and Downs hit safely to right, scoring
Leach and sending Saier to third. Man
ager McGraw then sent Crandalt Into the
game to replace Marquard. Archer lifted
a fly to Murray, ending the inning.
Doubles by Murray and Merkle scored
New York's only run in the fourth Inning-
. Murray opened the Inning with a
two-base hit and Merkle sent him home
with two-base drive Into right field.
Merkle went to third on Herzog's sacri
fice, but Was caught between third and
home when Meyers drove the ball at
Zimmerman. ', Meyers ' then attempted
to reach second, but Zimmerman relayed
the ball to Downs, catching Meyers ten
feet from the base.
Spectacular doubl plays out New
York's chance for scoring early In the
game. ' In the second Inning with on
out, Merkle was safe on Downs' error.
Ilersog doubled, sending Merkle to third.
Meyers was purposely walked, filling
the bases.. . Fletcher hit to Tinker, who
caught Meyers at second. ' Downs shot
the ball to Sater, getting Fletcher and re
tiring the side.
Richie pitched splendid ball for Chicago,

WADHAM WINS THE GOLF
MATCH ATHAPPY HOLLOW
Out of a field of fourteen entrants,
Charles K. Wadham, Dalton, Mass., won
the Stationers' golf match for the Frank
Hal silver trophy cup at the Happy
Hollow club links. Wadham's net card
was 94, which was low against the other
golfers. '

of the fourth reliability tour of the Min
nesota State Automobile association was
completed today, when the tourists ar
rived here. They left Winnl;g Monday.

JOE JEANETTE SIGNS TO
FIGHT JACK, JOHNSON
CHICAGO, Aug. 15. Jack Johnson to
day signed articles to fight Joe Jeanette
ten rounds before the St. Nicholas Ath
letic club of New York on September 25.
Jess McMahon, who made the match,
guaranteed Johnson $25,000, with a prli
lege of 60 per cent of the first 150,000 of
the receipts and 35 per cent of all over
that amount. Johnson also is to get hal?
of the moving picture returns.
Both Johnson and McMahon posted for
feits with Al Tearney. The referee was
not named, but McMahon said It prob
ably would be Dan Tone, the club's offi
cial. Jeanette's signature was obtained sev
eral days ago. What his share will be

Sues Hotel in Behalf
of Cecilia Donahoe
DULUTH, Minn., Aug. 15.-(Speclal
Telegram.) Anthony J. Donahoe of
Omaha has sued the Spalding hotel of
Duluth, of which Edwin H. Lee Is pro
prietor, for $50,000 damages. In behalf of
Mr. Donahoe's daughter, Cecilia, nged 11
years. The girl is alleged to have fallen
from the third floor to the basement In
the elevator shaft, a distance of seventy
feet, and to have sustained severe in
juries. In addition Mr. Donahoe asks
$2,000 general damages for himself and
$1,750 special damages.
. The accident happened about a year
ago. It Is alleged that Mrs. Donahoe and
her daughter entered the elevator to go
to the fourth floor to their room. The
girl by mistake got off at the third floor
v.'lth another guest, alighting there, and,
observing her mistake, tried to get aboard
the car again, but Instead fell under the
car and down the shaft.
