The BPI'earanc of the stock market today after the triple holiday was hardly changed and Irudlna waa In the same dull monotone aa dmlng lha prepaid I tig week. Tha total transactions for the dav war only klta-htly In eicrea of $J0O.d). Trading In bond waa again fairly act ive. While tha bond Issues which have been brought out recently hava been ab sorbed readily and In some cases largely iiaermihacrlond, the Inmilry from day to day for bond whlnh have been on the market for eotne Ume I raid by dealer to be ! active than might have been expected In view of the large dividend and Interest disbursements next week. Amonej tha few stock which moved widely today, lhlgh Valley and tlreat Northern Ore ewrltflcate were conspicu ous. The or certificates showed pro nounced weakness early In the day, aell Ing for a time at a decline nf 3 point. Ohlgh Valley rose to the highest figure on record lnce It was listed In New York, but later lost more than It had nslned. The selling was presumably based on reports of further postponement ff action In regard to the segregation of the coal property from tne railroad, concerning which Wall ftreet ha re nntly heard much gossip, but no au thentic statement. The copper group developed strength In the afternoon. Anaconda and Utah Copper made substantial gain. United Hiates Steel showed moderate firmness. Repurta from tha steel trade continued to l.e of favorable character and It was estimated that by the first of the year the plant of the steel corporation would ue running; at clone to 85 per cent of cspscltv. Money rates i.howed no reflection of the Imiietidlrig heavy demand for January I aymenta and It was apparent that there waa a large supply of loanable funds on hand. The bank received large re mittance from out-of-town correspond ent which are prepared to take ad vantage of an upturn In rates If such a movement occurs at the end of the year. Prices were shaded In the bond market. with Wabash 4n showing conspicuous heaviness after a slight advance. Total rales, par value, S3.0O2.O0O. United ftates bonds, wera unchanged on call. In the first piace, there was a very heavy fall of snow tnrougn out the morning, which made cattle look less attractive than they would otherwise. Again recelDta were very liberal and buy ers apparently had gotten it into tneir head that they would continue large lor the next two days. Hence they seemea to feel that If they did not buy cattle todav It would mean that they would buy them sun cheaper tomorrow, one oi ins causes for the bearish feeling among buvars was unuuestlonably tha high prices paid for cattle at the close of last week. In fact, buyers were calling At tention to the fact that prices at lest weeks close were unreasonably nign Whatever may have been the cause or the combined causes the fact remained that tha market this morning on all kinds of killing cattle was extremely slow and dull. Buyers started out right at the out set bidding sharply lower prices, in tact. In many cases prices that were aa much as liVrt25o lower than last week's high close. As may well be Imagined sellers were In no mood to take off any sucn amount with the result that torenoon passed without very much business being transacted, and it was close to miuuay before enough cattle had changed hands to really make a market. When they did aell it was on a carta of prices that were weak to 10ftl6o lower and in some cases possibly worse than that aa compared witn last weeks ciose. There wera very few feeders here, in fact hardlv enough to make a market A a ihara waa noma little luoulrv for cat tle ot that description tho prices paia were generally steady with last weex.
