Indicated that Vogel had made a desper
ate fight for life.
The police believe that Vogel was en
ticed into the basement last night by
thieves who knew that he had .purchased
a quantity of Jewelry recently amd in.

The value of Ma Jewelry la pbaced by
the polio at 110,000. Only one or two
articles, of little value, have been found.
The coroner's opinion Is that the thieves
attempted to bum the body In the- fur

states and touching two nations, will be
oompleSed from Winnipeg, Man.; to Gal
vestonj Tex., by next summer, according
to Joim C. Nicholson of Newton, Kan.,
secretary of the Meridian Road associa
tion, wihlch has charge of the work. Mr.
Nlcholfton arrived here today on busi
ness connected with the road.
"Every mile, every school house,
church, turn, bridge and village Is to ba
marked: in advance along the way," Mr.
Nicholson said. We have all the road
located " except about thirty miles In
Roberts-1 county, South Dakota, Grading
Is progressing over a large part of It." -

home of bis parents at Springfield, De
cember f, 1911. He was educated In the
public schools of Springfield, graduating
from ttie high school in UOS, He attended
the Nebraska State university four years,
receiving an A. B. degree and also at the
Laama tint receiving a captalo'a commis
sion. In 1810 he engaged In the hard
ware and Implement business at Spring
fletU, helping to organise tha Klwell
Peters company. At the- tlmo of his
death he was a member of the village
board. He was to have been married No
vember 16 to Miss Mary Spearman of
Wayside, Neb.
