PROMOTER REFUSES TO YIELD Go Between Lightweight Champloa and McFarlaad Real Prise Fight According tn District Attorney Seabel. MILWAUKEE wis . Sept 10 -The TVol-gast-MrFarland ten-round, no-dec.ision box ing contest, scheduled for September 15 here, will not be permitted if Sheriff Wil liam F. Two of the socialist aldermen are Indignant at the course taken by the sheriff. Sheriff Arnold In an Interview tonight Said he had an oninlon from T"ltrW At. ' torny G. Seabel. In which that offi- cial cited the Statutes -governing "prize fights." which makes a violation of the law a penal offence or punishable by a fine of not exceeding $1,000, nor lest than 1100. The district attorney than said: "Of course, a mere bcixlng'or sparring match is not Illegal at common law, unless carried to such extent as to cause serious Injuries to one of the participants and o conducted as-to amount to a breach of the peace. But from the Information I have been able to gather, I learn that Ad Wolgast Is the lightweight champion prize fighter, that McFarland also lays claim to such distinction in that profession; that Wolgast is to receive 80 per cent of the admission and Is guaranteed at least $15,000, while McFarland Is to re ceive 28 per cent of the gate receipts and that a large number of the sporting- fra temlty from San Francisco, Chicago, New York and other clues are expected to at tend this contest. "My information leads me to believe that the coming event contains all the neces sary elements to make it a prize fight, such as Is prohibited by law." Matchmaker Mulkern In a statement says he believes the district atorney and aherlff must have . been misinformed as it was never proposed to hold anything more than a boxing contest such ss has been dlclded In Wisconsin courts to be legal.
