CHICAOO, A tie;. 1 1. With exporters and
millers competing for' offering and with
farmers reported to have atopped selling
hard winter grades, the wheat market
. today took on an upward turn. Closing
prices were steady at a net advance of
He to S&'c. Latest figure on corn
showed a gain of 'c to H'S'Sc, and for
? oats a rise of Ho to s. The outcome In
i provisions was 6c to 374c decline.
Improved demand for cash wheat, both
here and at the seaboard, acted as the
I main lever that pried futurea up. Reports
1 were current that India was rainless and
that tha export surplus In Russia would
J be even smaller than recently predicted.
I not more than 84.000,000 bushels. At the
same time word came that the movement
of winter wheat from American farma had
t been practically ahut off, the producera
holding for higher prices, especially In the
cane of the hard varieties of the grain.
The greatest strength of the session devel
oped Just before the close and was la
decided contrast with early weakness.

the smallest lor a Friday of any time since
the middle of April, only twenty cars being
reported in. Still, the total tor tne week
to date la almost 2,000 head larger than ior
the same period last week and in fact
larger than for a number of weeks back.
As compared with a year ago there has
been a gain of 3,iu0 head.
There were really not enough beet steers
here today to make a market or establish
quotations, but the feeling was steady
with yesterday. This means that the mar
ket today Is around Xbuuc higher on the
choice corn-ted steers than It was one
week ago. Western steers and the general
run of oorn-teds are safely l0&16c higher.
What few cows and hellers were in sight
this morning Bold In about the aam
notches as yesterday. While the market
han suown aome changes this week, It Is
now back about where It was at the close
of last week.
There were hardly any stockers or feed
ers In first hands, but the feeling la strong,
and it Is sate to quote dnMiamu .
stock cattle and feeders UrQibc higher than
the close of laat week. Common light
stockers, on the other hand, are slow
sellers.

bog trade had
much the same appearance as Wednesday s
market. Trend to values In the shipping
and packing branches of the trade was
directly opposite and declines In the one
iuBt about equalled advances In the other,
juring the early part of the session ship
pers and speculators bought quality stuff
of all weight at figures 6&loc higher.
Later, after thla demand was withdrawn,
packing selections were made at levels
generally a nickel and frequently a dime
under those of yesterday. Early business
waa fairly aotlve, but movement toward
the close was rather dull than otherwise.
Range In prices widened considerably
despite the fact that receipts had small
size. Only seventy losds were received and
quality was seaaonably mixed none too
good on an average. Volume of shipping
demand showed no visible shrinkage at ad
vances and something Ilk 66 per cent of
the total estimate moved on ordera In the
hands of buyers not associated with local
packing concerns. Clearance was de
layed until well along toward 11 o'clock.
A large portion or the run landed at a
spread of 87.107.26, ordinary packing
giades selling at or near 87.16. Choice
bacon animals reached 37.(6, the best price
paid locally since January, a month that
cialms a top of 38.10.

8HEKP Fresh supplies of eheep carried
fairly lara sorts of common and cull
quality and aa yesterday'a clearance of all
c aee waa complete the main market was
properly a feeder affair. Receipts wers
s,mtrd at an odd tyenty londs, over
h..,i of this total being suitable only for
country treue. firings of fat lambs
fold with usual llitht cuts, however, as the
most of the lamb shipments th's far this
eaon have seldom yielded teeder sorts
gt csttr than 10 per cent.
Psckers were all out early and mads a
thorough canvuss of offerings, buying good
handy sheep and fst lambs a', figures about
a dlmo lilKher, but inslHtlng upon a stesdy
cost in the heavy sheep Market. Rnt-e
lambs of toppy quality and finish reached
3t.86 and good grades r.Md around IAoy
o.iio. Fairly good to Inferior light lambs
sold on down the list, moving within a wide
kpreod.
llsndy sheep got the benefit of countrv
competition as usual, and It Is largely due
to support from feeders that underweight
stuff Is acting more creditably than big
sheep, especially wethers. Wethers with
plenty of weight are selling around 33.2.vj
8 40. but a 3-1.75 top wa.4 made today on
choice 100-pound wethers, all twos. This
price Is the highest paid this week for this
class of stock. .Killing ewes are moving at
tmnll dlKcoiints under th( ordinary run of
we-.ners and go.id yearlliiKS have been land
ing oa both sides of 34 Ml.
As compared with a week ago. heavy
herp averaged about stesdy on a trade
that waa generally slow, handy sheep are
cloning a little higher and fat lambs show
advances of 205725c. The five days' receipts
give a total that Is fully norma), sheep
outnumbering lambs and feeder sorts
amounting to about 40 per cent of re
ceipts. Trade In feeders had usual active tone
today and lamba ruled a little hiithcr. sheep
selling steady to strong. Feeder lambs are
quote hie up to 35.50, while light and handy
feeder wethers are going to the country at
3i lO'dS40. (Some of the wethers purchased
around 83 26 this week were properly fat,
snd their new owners sssert that they In
tend to give them mostly exercise, a little
feed and a quick return billing. Rreedlng
ewes have been scarce, but an outlet exists
for desirable yearlings and twoa at 34.26.9
4.50. In fact, anything suitable for feeding
or breeding can be placed readily at pres
ent, and the week's clearance will be com
plete. Current value rhow net advances
of K&ffROc. over a week airo. the demand for
thin lambs being more urgent at prices
showing the most Improvement. Packets'
tab on feeders esierday shiwed an aggre
gate purchase of 3. WO, Just about half of
total receipts.
