Short In May wheat started the fire works yesterdsy rljy buying In of large line of ahort contracts. No one seems to have any Una ot wheat the bull leaders nr hat the scattered short Interests will do. Ai for the mora distant futures, the cah dmind la still dull and crop reporta are flattering and the selling aide la generally favored. Some dry weather reporta have been started In the northwest, but this seems premature, as rains later In the sea son will be more beneficial. There Is a great deal of merit In the ad vance In corn which has been baaed upon a light country movement followed by good, cash demand. A good deal wtll depend upon the weather from now on, as bright, warm weather will hurry along planting and start a fre farm mftvinill which mlcht rhinn the whole tone of the corn trade. ! Wheat ruled fairly steady after the sharp advance In face of heavy profit tak- Ing sales. Cash wheat waa strong, samples offered being lo. over yesterday. i Corn was a bit weak and offerings were freer at the advance. Cash corn remained unchanged and a reaction Is likely. - Primary wheat receipts were VQm bUHheln and shlpaients were 484, mio buh-is, against receipts last year of 203.000 bushels and shipments of 475,000 bushels. Clearances were 09,Oi bushels of corn, 1000 bushels of rata and wheat and flour equal to 236,000 buahela. Liverpool closett unchanged to Vd lower on wheat and lower on corn. The change was not brought about, how ever, until the market had passed through several houra of uncertainty. In which de clines were extended. During the fore part of the session there was heavy selling, especially of Heading and In Ion Pacific. . Trading was no leas professional than for months past, but the bullish operations seemed to be accom plished by more than the ususl degree of assurance and eventually shaped the char acter of the market. Prices rose steadily In the late pnrt of the day. The greatest gains were scored by the less active Issues. International Harvester was the most prominent of these, gaining five points on unusually heavy dealings. No definite news accompanied the advance in the stock, but the excellent annual state ment recently Issued by the company makes plausible reporta of a possible In crease in the dividend. The movement be came wider and more confident In the later dealings, embracing virtually all the better known Issues. The telephone stocks were especially strong, presumably having been effected favorably by the statement that arrangements for closer connections be tween cable companies and the American Telephone and Telegraph company and al lied Interests had been advanced far to ward completion. Some of the lower priced railroad stocks. Including Denver Rio Orande. Erie and Missouri Pacific, were among the strong est today. St. Paul yielded fractionally after the publication of Ita March report. showing a decrease In operating Income or IMn.OOO. Union Pacific waa one of the most active In the list, advancing more than two points after an early decline of a point. Bonds were active and strong, with con tinued heavy buying of New York City Issues. Total sales, par value, 85,408.000. I'nlted States government bonds were un changed on call. The market as a whole waa without any noteworthy changes nd In fact waa really in better shape than might have been anticipated considering the size of the receipts. There was the usual demand for light Snd handy cattle of good quality and any thing going unaet that head sold Quito freely in the morning at fully steady prlcea. On tha other hand inferior light cattle and heavy cattle, especially those on the coarse order, were slow and a drag irom start to ilnian. etui prices aid not show much change, although the tendency on that kind was weak.
