of encouragement for the bulls were fully
offset by news that foreign markets had
become depressed owing largely to im
proved conditions for European crops.
Furthermore, cash demand turned out
poor in all directions. Trading in July de

the close at 87c, a net loss Of c.

was made in the direction of higher prices
on the Stock exchange today despite the
fact that the pressure which had been
directed against stocks In the last few
days was not relaxed. The market dis
played strong powers of resistance and
after a period of weakness which followed
the opening rallied and held firm.
A large part of the day's business again
centered around United Mates steel. Trad
ing In the shares constituted nearly one
third of the total, many fair sired blocks
changing hands. The heaviness of the stock
earlier in the day was ascribed to a reiort
of Chairman Oary's resignation. The re
port, however was Quickly denied by the
chairman and the stock recovered. The
Quarterly statement Issued after the close
of the market was disappointing, estimates
of earnings havong been In the neighbor
hood of $28.000.0110, as compared with $23.
619.000 shown In the report. The unexpect
edly small figures tor the quarter were
explained largely by the January earnings,
which were lees than $6,000,000.
Activity and strength of copper shares
during the last two days and reports of
huge sales of the metal were followed to
day by the statemeent that one of the
largest agencies had reduced Its selling
price of copper from 12H to 12Vi cents. It Is
understood that large sales were made
at the latter rate.
The Haniman shares were affected ad
versely at the opening by the ruling against
the Southern Pacific In the Oregon land
case, but Southern Pacific, which lost a
point, quickly recovered and Union Pacific
was one of the strongest stocks at the
close.
The bond market was firm. Total sales,
par value, $3,189,000. United States bonds.

newal of yesterday's late covering move
ment on the part of summer or near month
shorts, in spite of rather disappointing
European cables. Business was moderately
active and there was considerable selling
of the late positions and the market bw
came Irregular in the late trading. The
close was steady, net 6 points lower to 10

CATTLE The yards were lull of cattle
this morning, 207 cars being reported in.
At the sanie time most other markets were
fairly well supplied for a Tuesday and from
no point were the early advices at least,
encouraging. The demand here, while fair
was by no means urgent and the trade
started out very slow and weak on all
kinds. Fortunately there was quite a num
ber of cattle of outside buying orders and
the shippers bought quite a number of
handy light cattle at prices that were
cteady or very close to steady with yes
terday. The trade was very slow and he
morning was well advanced before very
much business bad been transacted.

the general run of cow stuff was weak to

The market on fat steers closed slow,
with heavy weights at least 10c lower than
yesterday, in fact, outside of the early
market, when a few of the best light
weights sold close to steady, the general
market was weak to 10c lower on all
grades.

ARRESTED AT WOLTON

WOLTON, Wyo., April 25. (.Special. )
For several years a gang of sheep thieves
have been operating In this section, and
last winter J. A. Delfelder, president of
tho- Wyoming Wlool Growers' association
lost nearly 500 sheep. Suspecting that
members of this gang were guilty and de
termined to put a stop to the thieving, Del
felder, accompanied by officers, rounded
up the thieves, or four of the gang, and
all are in the Fremont county Jail at len
der. One has signified Ills willingness to
turn state's evidence. Ills admissions are
startling, for people heretofore supposed to
be honest In every manner are implicated.
Delfelder is determined that these men
i shall I punished the full extent of the
law. He Is now after others who have
been stealing, changing brands and killing
sheep for mutton.
