The market aa a whole baa been In very unsatlaiactoi y condition aa viewed from a arller'a etunapoint. Beef ateera at the beginning of the week Were fully aitady ana aomelimea poealbly a little atrong on Monday, later on in the week, capeciully on Thuredav. when receipts were unusually large for that day, the market bruke anarply, aq that at tne cloee of the week prlcea wer around 250 lower than the week lr(ore. This deollne waa apparently the direct reault of re oeipta at ail market points being larger than the consuming demand for meat products. - Cowa and heifers, which have been In aplendld demand all spring, and which have been selling higher In proportion than any other kind of cattle, experienced the worat break of all. They were at the cloee of the week 2j50c lower than the week before, good kinds of fat heavy cows suf fering fully a much decline as the less dealrable klnda; In fact, heavy cowa and Belters really suffered the moat loaa, wblie the lighter klnda held up the beat. The aupply of atookera and feeders has been aatretnelT light all the week, with the result thai there were really not enough cattle oq moat daya to make a market. Owing to the aupply being ao light, ateady prlcea were BiaioUMned, the market being at tne close of the week fully ag strong as It waa one week ago. None of the regular buy ers seemed to be very anslous for malarial, however, and It required the greater part of the full morning seaslon to make a Uuence of slack demand toward the close and final salee were made at yesterday's levels. UilApers suported the market with orders r that were reasonably large, but not very Insistent. This claaa of buyers furnished an outlet for between 15 and 90 oer cent of receipts, packers purohaslng over 4,000 head In all. Usual spreads were preeerved, but range was allghtly narrower than last week, due to recent depression in bacon weights. ' Butcher hogs moved around 15.94 and beat light animals reached $6 06. The sharp drop in prices after the rise of Tuesday Induced some liquidation on the part of tired holders, but the volume was not aa larse as might naturally have been, expected after the prolonged and weary dullness. The liquidation and the support ing orders that came Into the market, to gether with the covering of short con tracts, gave brokers a little more business which they certainly needed. RAILROAD MEN OPTIMISTIC Daly Dlecordaat lete In Ike on f Prosperity Comes from the Kirrsw Confines of Wall treef. BY PRESTON C. ADAMS. NEW YORK. April iti trtpectal to The Ber.l It may be thought I dwell too much on the generally prosperous condition of the country In these letters. But It Is a pretty big question which Interests us all and then prosperity is a right good thing to think about. 80 I'll risk another para graph or so on conditions. Every man of affairs who travels with his eves open through the west and south comes back with the same story of sound business conditions, nothing In the way of a boom he It understood, but a good, steady consumption demand, people with money enough to buy what they need and pav for it, bright crop outlook and altogether a pleasant story to hear. President Frank A. Vanderllp of the Na tionsl City hank for Instance after a trip covering nearly every state In the south and west comes home a pronounced op timist. President B. F. Ypskun of the Frisco lines tells the same tsle and so It goes right down the line. The only discordant note comes from the purllens of Wall street. The common people are either too busy, too wise or both to go in for themselves, so the stock and cotton brokers are compelled to play among themselves and everybody knows there Is no money In any game where the players r all professionals. The lamb Is especially essential for a pleasant and profitable gamble in stocks, cotton or grain. Taking It by and larga it is doubtful If the country as a whole ever ws much better off than It Is now. KIretrIf) Ina- Railroads. One of the Interesting development In American transportation la the slow, but steady electrification of the steam rail roads. All the big system which enter New York are now using electricity so iar as their terminal divisions are concerned and are gradually extending the gone of electricity run train. "The electrification of steam roads is a yet somewhat in the experimental stage," a New Haven official la quoted as saying, "but within s year you will see the New Haven electrically equipped as far as New Haven, and possibly work stsrted on the Boston end. Our engineers are now work ing on the question of the transportation of freight by electricity, with very good results. While the New Haven may not be ahowlng any substantial reduction In r berating costs between New York and Btamford by the ue of electricity com pared with steam, the general results to date have mor than Justified the expendi ture. I think there will be a wonderful progrea mad In the application of elec tricity to steam roads within the next few years, and this will show some rapid changes In the conduct of th railroad business of the country." List of "lomt-Oii." When th federal authorities raid ques tionable concerns engaged in the selling of mining and other stocks they frequently find lists containing thousand upon thou sand of names and addresses. Surprise I sometimes expressed that such collec tion of possible dupes could have been gathered. Those familiar with the work Inns ot the financial districts know fairly well how these Hats come Into being. There are men who make a regular business of supplying these "sucker" lists at so much per thousand. The nsmes are collected In devious ways. Those who are ever Induced to reply to any ot th glaring advertise ment of promotsrs ar forever after reg istered as possible eaay-marka and con tinue to recelv the moat amaxlng offers from awlndlera. One of the best Hats In existence ha tjeen enriched by name supplied by a paper which make a specialty of giving advice to Investors. Then nam are vended, it I said, at 10 cent each, and the seller derives a nine llttlo Income there from. When one cunoern Is forced out of business there 1 usually ken competition tor It mail list. Thus tha mor energetic firomoter can. In course, of time, compile lit as long as their customers are short of sense. Secnrltle Float Easily. In five years $1,620,000,000 bond, note and aqulpment obligation have matured in thta country. Of this hug total short term note hav contributed fully half $870,000,000 to b xact. Bond hav been responsible for omewhat under $640,000,600. A feature of the 1909-10 financing was the extensive Installment that had to be paid on atock Issues, whereas scarcely on com pany I now receiving funds under such a scheme. Th absorption of new stock Is sues haa been so indifferent that borrow ers hav either contrived to place bonds or have reaorted to ahort time note. As compared with former years, 1911 and I91i bringa few maturing obligations. The production of gold In Houth Africa last month broke all records. The yield of 474.066 ounces Is comfortably above the previous high figure, tW0,4."s recorded in December, 1904, when the total waa awelled by th customary cleaning up at tha end of the year. In January of this year the yield amounted to 481.027, easily a high record for that month, while February also contribu ted the largest total (810.821 ounces) for that short month. For the first quarter of 1911, therefor, th production ha to taled 1,947,920 ouncee, against 1.781,109 In 1910, l,7e7,S31 in 1909 and 1,077,180 In 1904. If this rat be maintained, the grand total for 111 will easily eclipse that for snv prevlou twelve month. The value m.ty on this occasion approach h tl76.000.OiO. The whole of th Rand output Is regularly consigned to London by the weeklv mail steamer from Cape Town and Is offered eaoh Monday in the open market, from whenr It goee to relnforc the hank re serves of England, or Franc, or Germany, or th United Htates. or other countries. t.
