The irregular price conditions that have been prevailing In cotton goods gave promise at the close of the week clearing up In the near future. Revlalon of prices Is under way and will be made to reach a trading basis. The mills are being pressed In con sequence, some oi the low prices ana cur tailment of production was undertaken in munv of the southern mill centers, supple mentlng the extensive curtailment which has been going on In New England. I tie volume of business being done In gray goods is fair, but at prices which manu facturers say show losses, varying, from lc to c per pound. Fall River sold"ax,000 pieces or print cloths, or wntc.n tsu.uuu pieces were for spot delivery. This volume was about 30,000 pieces in excess of the restricted product. There la a fair trade passing In jobbing houses' on prints, glng hams, wash goods and some new lines ot domestics. Buyers are still very conserva tive In their orders, but they order very frequently and are making no effort to Increase their holdings of merchandise In anticipation of future business with the south and better southwest which has been doing a rather better business than other sections. Orders of underwear are slow. Fine gauged seamless staple hosiery Is In Increas ing demand. Milrtlng manuiacturers are beginning to place their orders on goods for the coming season. Features of the Trading; aud Closing; Price an Hoard of Trade. CHICAGO., March 18. Except for a brief dip during initial trades wheat today ruled strong. The reason lay chiefly In pessimistic crop reports from western Kansas by u Chicago expert, who yesterday snt for ward glowing dispatches regarding the east half of the state. Closing prices were Vao higher then last night. In corn there was a net gain of 'ac to c, oats were unchanged to He up, and provisions down BfcHc to 20c. Attention to the telegrams concerning the western part ot Kansas developed acutely when it was noticed that the ex pert's employers here were purchasing on large scale to cover short wheat. This decided many other shorts to reduce their commitments, and not hold the trades open over Sunday. The weak start was on favoring rains In a good portion of the winter crop belt, and because of disap pointing cables. Besides receipts at the primary centers were more liberal than for the preceding seven days and there was no trace left of the alleged Improve ment in the demand for. cash wheat. Such factors, however, were lost sight of In a hurry after Kansas i took the center of the stage. Steadiness prevailed at the close, which was almost the top level reached. May touched as high and low limits, 81 c and with last sales c up at mv:. Corn had special support from leadlna: loniis oiia meir' louowers.- iror the May delivery, prices ranged between . 43 and 4:'-VU W'.ic, with closing figures at ty-Vtf iic. a gain of Vuo net. Cash corn was steady. No. 3 yellow finished at 47VnS-lc. Oats displayed a tendency to Imitate corn, but commission offerings were free on every bulge. May ranged from 3ii&ii ilo to iiWc and In ths end were a shade up at 8lHUdlc. Provisions weakened in view of a heavv run of hoga. When the pit was closed pork had sagged 17VtfJc, and lard and ribs between a nickel and a dime. Prices in Chicago, Iiiiiuou.fe by the Up dike Oram company. Co Other buyers Totals , CATTLB-Iteeelpts of cattle' light this morning, only one reported In Thla brings the tot i. wrrR very close to 21.0(10 head, a slight, falling off as compared with last week and a year ago. Receipts the beginning of the woek were very heavy and on Monday and Tuesday the market on beef steers broke quite sharply. As receipts let up during the two daya following prices recovered a good share of the loss, so that at the close of the week the market at the worst could not be quoted more than weak to 10c lower, as compared with last week's close. Some would not admit even that much decline. One very choice bunch of cattle arrived which aold up to $6.50, the highest price of the year to date. Cowa and heifers did not show so much decline as beef steers during the early part of the week, so that at the close they are practically steady with one week ago. The demand has been very good for cow stuff throughout the week and the trade in a good healthy condition. Veal calves have sold well throughout the week, but they are around 25o lower than last week. Bulls and stags have also eased off a little. Stockers and feeders have been In fair demand, although the volume of business do ng has not been very large. The so called "green" cattle that have i.urf com or other feed have commanded steady prices all the week and as high as $6.10 was paid for best westerns. On the other hand the medium and common grades of both stock cattle and warmed-up feeders had a uowiiward 11. , au mo urouuu ltiil5c lower for the week. notations 011 cattle; Oooa to choice beef steers, $6,104(6.35; fair 10 good beef steers, $d.7(iS.10: common in fair K.r steers, $4.75ci5.70; good to choice cows, and heiiers. 4. mnpi.60; tair to good cows'anii heifers. $4.!0ki4 70; common to fair cows and heifers. $3.0034.30; good to choice Block ers and feeders, $6.5Ob5.90; fair to good Blockers ana feeders, k ooj.j.6t; common M fair atuckers and feeiiera. $4.206 00' stock heifers. $3.7Mj4.50; veal calves, $4.00&7.75; bulls, dtags, etc., $4.0u& 5.20. Some business was done early at figures no worse than 104j05o lower, but values grad ually weakened from these declines until the late trade averged a flat 20c lower than bulk of sales yesterday. Buyers fur packing concerns were largely responsible for a clearance, as the shipping and specu lative demand was practically dead. The sharp slump In general trade today la credited to heavy supplies at all the lead ing slaughter points, South Omaha In cluded. Long strings went at' a narrow spread of $6.50ij 55, a large portion of butcher weight offerings moving at these figures. Heavies dropped to $6.45 and less, and best paeon animals made a top of 86.65. as com pared with yesterday's high price of $6.60. until toaay, tne trade this week has acted very creditably under very heavy receipts. About 74, wo head were credited to the six days ending March 13, two years ago. This week's run,' however. Includes a dally record that Is even older. Tuesday's supply of 18 ii.St head was the heaviest recorded' orl any single day slnca May 22, 1908, when over 19.0WO head were received. Each day's clearance this week has been reasonably early and practically complete. ins raarsei cnanging sngntiy from time to time.
