XLECTION REDUCES SPECULATION Ks purls to Korela-a Coaatrles Show am I a crease, "hll I be I m porla Keep Grswlsg Leas. NEW TORK, Nov. S (Special Telegram.) Liquidation In speculative markets dur ing last week Included many agricultural commodities and other raw staples. Home changes have b-en wrought In the general price level, which have served per haps to bring our own price through de clines more Into touch with the general price level of the rest of the world. This would seem to be somewhat Implicit In the way In which our exports to foreign coun tries are waxing, while iminirts are wan ing. Home cherk administered by necessity of extravagance. Manufacturers' orders have been greatly reduced, while the stocks on merchants' shelves have been materially depleted to a great extent. Stork Market la Good Shape, The liquidation of the year places the stock market In a strong position in com parison with Its position when prices are well up and stocks In large quantities are held on more or less dubious margins for miscellaneous account. Speculation In Wall street Is Influenced to a great extent by elections, which may 'have accounted In part for the unsettled condition during the week. Many speculators withhold In vestments until after the result from the elections are known. Austral an shipments of wheat th! week were 9p2.000 bu.. against 64S.0VO last week and 8S,0C0 last year. Fall Klver sale of print cloths for the week are estimated at 75.000 pieces. Includ ing 30,000 spots. Deliveries on contracts run through December, January and Febru ary. Buyers showed themselves very In different and could not be Interested In goods at any price Curtailment among the mills was very light, amounting to not more than 20,000 pieces. Merchandise) Bale Off. In the ynrn market there, was a disposi tion to shade price from 'Ac to lc per pound, in order to stimulate purchases on the part of small users. This week s merchandise Imports at New- York were 25 per cent below the same week of last November, and with tho two excep tions were the smallest of any week this autumn. This gives an Interesting side light on the progress In readjusting our foreign trade position. A further rise In the London open mar ket discount rates was announced, which have now recovered more than one-half of the decline that followed the French bank's relief measures. In spite of the known recourse In London this week for credits lo sustain the Stock exchange position, the actual week-end surplus reserve declined 83.SOO.000. This was In consequence of the unexpectedly larce outgo of $6,600,000 cash from the associated banks' reserve. This was In part due to gold shipments to Canada. Closing quota tions on mining e,llce 150 Totals 241 2,777 400 CAT'i LE-The week closes with a rather Insignificant run of callle, there being practically tiotliing In toe way of beet sieers on sale. Tne week s supiilles. how ever, have been very lioeral, fooling up 3S.700 head or some 1.000 head moro than a week ago and 10,0u0 more than a year ago. Supplies of cornfed beeves have oeen Increasing, but tho demand for tiiein liaa not heen very extensive of late, owing to the demoralized condition of tne beef mar kets down cast. Keports from eastern centers Indicate the markets aro glut ted with beef and practically the only de pendable outlet is lor the, cneauer grades, so that local dress beef men havs been making a strong effort to get the cornfad cattle lower, alues have ruled very un even ail week, but in the main closing uuotaUuns are generally oOufioc lower than two weeks ago. The best cattle here this week brought f7.05, and the bulk of the native beeves are selling around tt.00r6.50. 1 he tone to the market at the close was decidedly weak. Cows and heifers have also met with a very uneven demand, but closing quota tions are not so very much different from those of a week sku. As a rule the demand for butcher stock has been broader and the market steadier than for beef steers owing to the fact that the market Is ab sorbing the butcher grades of beef more rapidly than the hiKher priced stuff. Out side demand has been very fair all week for the desirable heifery grades, but the fair to medium kinds have been more 01 less irregular sellers, the condition of tne market depending much on the size of the ret. el p ts. Business In stockers and feeders has been more or less demoralized this week and the trend of values lias been lower from start to finish, owing to the recent sharp decline In values of cornfed cattle the de mand has fallen off very materially and while there has been some inquiry right along for the mure desirable grades, the market has suffered a uevere uieag anu values ate from 25'u50c lower than last week. Stock heifers have shared in the general decline and the close of the week linda quite a good many stockers and feeders in speculators' hands, as the de mand ts very slack, notwithstanding the decidedly lower prices. HOGS Hog trade started out In prom ising fashion this morning hut finished poorly. One of the larger packers bought up a few loads early at figures about a nickel higher, but other buyers refused to enter the market on this basis, with the result that the movement came to a, stand still after the first few sales were made. Later, after Inquiry warmed up at prices iuny a nicaet lower man tnose of yester day, bulk began to sell. It was a quiet, slow market, however, nobody appearing very anxious for material even at the decline. Closing values were at bottom. averaging pretty close to a dime lower than yesterday s cost. Shippers aftotded but small support to the demand and most of the hoga were purchased on local killing account. Sup plies were fully normal for a Saturday ana ine run cuiTieu iew uacon weights. Heavy grades brought t'oWj 7.9.1. with rough heavies at the bottom of the list. Good mixed commanded ts .00 and better and lights topped at ts 55. For the week, receipts are light, but this condition has not served to stlmulatu demand by all means. Buyers were bear ishly Inclined on most days, current sales showing net declines of Wu20c. PRESIDENT ilELUN IS WISE Announces His Railroads Are to Ltava Politics Alone. POLITICIANS ARE BROKEN REEDS Alleged Power Una I eed to lllaek- mall t'orporat Ion's Hrraaar the Latter Let a False Fear Control Their Actions. RY PRESTON C. ADAMS. NEW YORK. Nov 5-iSoeclat to The Ree.l The marked, chance 111 tne attitude of our captains of Industry toward the pub lic nas heen commented on In these letters more than once. Evidence of this chansa an. constantly cropping out. For Instance, Pres. dent Mellen 01! the Host, in Maine Railroad company, which with the New oik. New linen aV llrir.,,-,t r,t ahli-h Mr. Mellon also is president, has heen rellted wl,h practically runnina- the IKilicles of New England, announces that hereafter his roads are out of polities. Corporations bent nrxin treating the mihllo iilrly are palnfullv Icarnlne- thai hev were. leaning on broken reeds when thev de- ended uixin corruptible politicians. Tired of Illackinall. Under polite names practices have been In '"gue In many parts of the country which really amounted to blackmail, and It la notorious that give a blackmailer a dollar and he will want a bundled. Various rail roads have spent enormous sums to "c- cclerate" legislative sentiment, to use tha beautiful euphemism of a New York trac tion gentleman, llut railroads und other orporatlons have found that for everv hill they managed to kill a dozen came to life. The whole business became Impossible. And now, thiouuh necessity uerhans aa much ns through virtue, a new and better policy 1.4 being adopted. Corporations hereafter inenn to nlace their affairs fairly and suuarelv In front of tho public and appeal to them for protec tion from rapacious politicians. Relieved of the free pass nuisance, of the canker of enates and now of "ve low doc con tributions, the railroads may be able to do better by both shippers and stockholders. Hlisid money has proven a poor Investment. Honesty may once attain prove not a bad policy. Orders Walt on Decision. Tho railroads are not in anv hutrv to placo large orders for steel and equipment. Nor are they making special effort to raise new capital at this Juncture.. They are con tent to K" alone as unlet v as tiosslb a. pending tho Interstate Commerce commis sion's decisions on the spplicHtlons to ad vance freight c.haraes. Moderate, hut not wholesale concessions are expected. 1 nerearr.es. on the better sentiment such concessions are counted uxn to create, ap plications tor new h-ans w 111 be issued. and if Investors supply the needed fund.. otitracts will be placed in lararo volumes. The huge crops cannot be transnnrted without wearing out rails, cars, enarlnes. etc.. and. In order to cope with this traffic, facilities must be kept In order. This will mean a generous amount of business for the steel corporation, the equipment com panies and other organizations dependent largely upon the purchases of the railroads. Demand for Cotton. I note In recent dispatches that th N,v England cotton mill men, convinced that they W ;0t h able to tret cotton munh cheaper than It Is today, have adjusted their business to curglltions. and are work ing practically on full time. It is esti mated by mill authorities that approxi mately 95 per cent of the total spindles of the United Statas are again producing. 1 ne. most encouraging feature of the alt. uatlon Is the advancing goods market. After several months, during which tha mills were unable to get sufficiently high pi ices for their product to cuaranteo naw dollar for an old one, goods have advanced to aievel at least approximately corres ponding to lltVcent cotton. Mills recently have stock,! un rathe heavily with cotton. .Some, indeed, hava taken on as much as ejght months' supply, which would carry them over to June next. Fx ports to England IIeu.Tr. The English mills also ara huvlnar ent. ton. The exports to England since Sep tember 1 have been unusually heavv. The continent, however, seems to be holding off the exports to European countries out side of England, being away below last season's figures. Stocks there are light and the continental spinners will have to get In the game soon. The early movlner cotton this year bus been of exceptionally good character. It has been Just the sort of ootton England wants. Borne Eng lish cotton men have written that tho character of the cotton Is so good that they cannot believe the crop is a short one, because they do not understand how conditions which could produce such ex cellent cotton could fall to produce a large crop. There are many things England does not understand about cotton, but that Is another story. There are many things England does undnrstami about cotton, and It has realised that the cotton that has been moving so far this year Is very good stuff. It can be said with truth that at the beginning of this season Oreat Hrltaln had very little cotton. It was In a worse shape In his respect, perhaps, than was the continent of Europe. I.ovett to Succeed llarahaa. In local railroad circles, and especially among men identified with the Harrlman lines, the Chicago story that It. 8. lxivett will be made president of the Illinois Cen tral when J. T. Hurahan retires next Jan uary on account of age Is received with doubt. As the choice of the late W. H. Harrlman for his successor, it Is declared that so long as Mrs. Harrlman lives there is no likelihood that any change, will oc cur In the present state of Judge Ixivett s official relations. The most logical selec tion for the Illinois Central presidency is J. L, Park, vice president in charge of operation, who is really the active man today In charge of a Halt s and invested with large authority. Effort to Hide Figures. What appears like a concerted effort to break up the compilation of reliable sta tistics of trade movements is being car ried out by some railroad and steamship companies which are refusing to supply those who have had such statistics in tha past with the facts any longer. Among the commodities data which have lately been refused are cotton and boots and shoes. The refusal bus -been given not only to government agencies, but also to other private agencies which are in the habit of gathering statistics, such as the New York Cotton exchange. The latter has been flatly refused information con cerning the movement of cotton, and trade Journals Interested ill the shipments of iioots and shoes have met a like rebuff from these and other transportation con cerns. The matter has been brought to the attention of .... airman Knapp of the Interstate Commerce commission. It is understood that the situation will be looked Into at once with a view to the preserva tion of the statistical services of the country uninjured and it is understood that little doubt Is entertained of the feasibility of compelling the mads to give the Infor mation desired as toon as they cau be rca soned with. house banks actual 91.2V.an0.O0O l.lM.rjss iJ 48.2H.Ofl 234 91R.0U0 bn.2IO.iaa) , Sill. 125 0i E"..Svrtii) 6.72(0 t.US.OOU 91.134 .eSs.Ofll) 122 074. ia! 21.731 ft") l.l,io3uv Kansas City Lite Stork Market.
