NEW YORK, Aug. . The development of
positive strength In the stock market today
was- the outgrowth largely of the power
of resistance to unfavorable factor which
was demonstrated.
The depression of the early prices waa
so moderate as to aerve as a warning to
the bear element In speculation that pres
ent holders ot stocks would not be In
duced easily to selll.
The advance In prlcea waa largely duo
to demands from uncovered shorts.
The dealings were. In a large degree,
professional, and Reading. L'riton Pacific,
and United Etatea soared upwards half of
the total transactions. The quiet tone of
the corn market today and downward
tendency in wheat left no room for sen
sational Inferences of harm to those crops.
The weather news ot the day was good and
the tone of the weekly bulletin ot the
weather bureau strengthened the assump
tion that It had Improved since the
date of tho monthly government report
Cotton was affected even more sharply
by the weather news and especially the
prospect of rains In Texas.
In the field of dividend action there was
the Increase in the Canadian Pacific div
idend and -the maintenance of the gloss
Sheffield Steel dividend. Th Canadian
railroad stock made a strong response and
the sympathetic effect was particularly
marked on the stocks of the transcontinen
tal railroad lines. The declaration of the
regular dividend on Sloss-Shef field Steel
disposed bf rumors that It was Intended
to reduce or pass the dividend. The re
bound in the price was correspondingly
sharp.
The better feeling over the crop promise
was of . far reaching effect The. manner
of lta working waa Illustrated In the as
sertion made by President Brown of the
New York Central that he was Influenced
In placing large orders for new equipment
by the conviction that good harvests were
now assured. The influence of this was
seen In tha Iron and steel Industrials, in
cluding U. 8. Steel. Persistent reports
that a cut had been made to I.J6.&0 on an
order for 20.000 tona of steel rails by the
Illinois Steel company to a western rail
road In order to neve the order from going
to foreign competitors - met with Iresu
denials but was discussed with great In
terest In the financial district
Secondary consideration of the July
Statistics of the copper producers assoc
