gram.) The democratic mass convention
was held yesterday and everything was har
monious until the redo". ut ions committee re
ported, endorsing Phallenbcrpcr and Hitch
cock. The convention was opposed to county
option. The demourats of Douglas county
were censured for holding a convention
without a call. The convention endorsed
the election of United States senators under
the Oregon plan and the debates were in
structed to vote as a unit at the state con
vention. When county option waa reached, the
Patrick forces being In the minority, the
resolution to endorse waa rejected.
Willis Reed, being prcsont, introduced
himself and addressed the convention.

This clause expressed a preference for the
. Initiative and referendum way of settling
the question, as compared with county op
tion, but a combination of county optlon
lsts and antl-optlonlsts defeated the meas
ure. A vigorous discussion then resulted
gainst the instructions of the state dele-
gallon. j The debate continued for an hour,
' when A vote by precincts showed 8 to 4S
for leaving the, instruction In the resolu-

Hall county republicans to Senator Burkett
and Its representatives In the legislature to
vote for him for senator," In view of the
fact that none' of the candidates have
signed statement No. 1, nor Is there any

Telegram.) The republican convention of
Johnson county this afternoon waa largely
attended. O. A. Corbln was chairman.
F. E. Bodle secretary and P. J. Turner
assistant secretary. Upon assuming the
chair Mr. Corbln gave a rousing speecn
and was loudly applauded. William Hay
ward of Nebraska City was present and
gave a splendid address and was appre
ciatively cheered. He made no attempt to
have the convention endorse his candidacy.
Strong resolutions were adopted, pledg
ing the delegates to the state convention
to support a platform favoring couny op

party as the only progressive and construc

has never compromised any moral issue and
It was thought it should tako a definite
stand upon every great issue presented to
the people. The people have the right to
express their will by the ballot upon all
great publlo interests and a law should be
enacted giving the power of direct legisla
tion, under proper restrictions. The Initia
tive and referendum law for county and
state government waa approved, by ma
jority rule, such as Is now given ciaes and
other, municipal subdivisions.

gram.) The democratic convention of Box
Butte county met this afternoon to elect
officers for the ensuing year, and to select
delegates to the state convention at Grand
Island, July 26. The delegates are: William
Mitchell, Calvin M. Cox, John R. Lawrence,
F. M. Broome and John W. Thomas.
No Instructions were given. Resolutions
were adopted recommending Gilbert M
Hitchcock for United States senator. The
administration of Governor Shallenberger
was endorsed. Nothing was said in regird

validity of the proceedings at the Douglas
county democratic convention is erroneous

no authority to place my name on the list
of delegates to the state convention," said
Mr. Dunn. "I am going to that convention.
but what I do will not be at the instigation
of Mr. Hitchcock or Mr. Shallenberger.

BLAIR. Neb., July 23. (Special Tele
gram.) The republican county convention
met here today following a hotly contested
primary election in the city yesterday. A
large crowd waa In attendance. Fifteen
of tho thirty delegates were progressives
and eight standpatters. A resolution to
Instruct the delegates against county option
was by a large vote tabled, many of the
delegates having agreed to pass the ques
tion up to the state convention.

Grant Garner, Dr. William Haller, John
Rodgers, Ed Russell, Ed Menking. C. X.
Hansen. M. Mortensen, M. C. Grover, Wili
Michaelson, Sam Stewart and C. T. I.ang.
