The arrivals consisted very largely of range atock. It being very ap parent that dry weather had forced cattle men to market stuck earlier tnan usual. While there was a large sprinkling of iteers tha receipts of cow sttitf were espe cially large. There was a lack of really good range beef, most of the cattle being rather on the feeder order. With such large receipts and with advices from other mar ket points indicating .a snaru Break in the market It wa only natural to expect a weak and lower market at this point. Buy ers were late in getting started and the early market was slow and draggy, so that the forenoon was wall advanced before very much business had been -transacted. The supply of strictly good beef steers was far from large. In tact, choice cattle were conspicuous by reason of their ab sence. The feeling wa that choice cattle would not show so much change, but the general run of cattle looked lo&iGc lower than last week's close, slthougti fully aa good, even better than on Monday of last week. The yards were full of cows and tha mar ket waa generally lOifl&c lower on that class of stock, with soma of the less de sirable cattle showing possibly even more decline than that. Stockers and feeders were ouoted 1067150 lower although the best kinds were hardly that much off, while common rough horned cattle possibly showed more decline even tnan that. v Quotations on cattle: Good to oholc cornfed steers, $7.228.00; fair to good corn fed steers, $6.2ufr7.26; common to fair corn fed steers. $a.008.6O: cood to choice cows and belfers. $5.0006.00: fair to cood cows and heifers, $3. 76a 500; common to fair cow ana neirers, a.(b'a3-7; good to choice Block er and feeders, 84.205.76; fair to good stockors and feeder, $3.754.26; common to fair atockera and feeder. 33.00ft3.75: stock heifers, $3.25.25; veal calves, $3.50tJ .w; uuus, stags, etc.. tJ.ooa-o.uu, BEEF STEERS. It rv quired some little time to eliape tip supplies ready for ale. of course, but demand was decidedly backward and hardly enough business was done timing early hours to determine the. exact statu of the trade. Karly sales carried figure that were right around a quarter lower than tnoe of last week close and while .ater ptlrns were Very umven the mitrket as a Whole was quotable on this basis. All clase of lock broke under the heavy run, hut sheep were inoi plentiful and It ws In this branch of the trade that the panicky feel ing waa most pronounced. Feeder trade was very sljeky from toe start. Sorts were large, as might be cx pentetf, and barring a few scattered orders that were available during the morning, volume of d-niand was Inadequate. It Is needless to add that feeder classes were hammered almost as hard as fat ara.l.-s, most of the stuff going at flrtires thnt were easily the lowest tuns fur this year. Aluiiso Wire, oiica iliiet of pollc oi Hackettstown, N. J., fell asleep a few nlshts lino for the first time In twenty year. The third night he died, not bavin teturned to cniicieunaa since hi eye cloaed. The end cwnie apparently from aa affection of the lungs and the bronchial tubes. Up to the time ha became I1L about ttireo wtcks ago. Wire wa lu perfect health, desplt tils unrefutcd assertion that hi eyes hud not closed lu sleep for twenty years. He was the fust of a family of even brothers and a sister to 411. Thirty years ago A Urn so Wlr was a (aim hand, employed by one of the wcaiUiy fanners in this vicinity. One hot tummti day he v. us driving a team of horses draw ing loads of new-mow 11 ' hay from the meadows to the barns. A thunder storm came up uudilenly and everybody lan to shelter except Wire, who was obliged lo stay with his frightened horses. As h stoisl at the animals' head thera waa a flash of lightning. He fell unconscious still clinging to the bridles In his hand. ' ' When lie revived he found the hoisui stunned and half dead from the effects of the bolt. He soun noticed, too, that he had become Uuaf. From that time on Wire was different from every other human be ing he ever had heard of. He went to many ear gpeciallstis but none of them could relieve his deafness. So he resigned himself to his fate and learned (he tleat and dumb alphabet. My tha time he reached the letter Z his deafness had disappeared and his bearing has been perfect since. Then the Insomnia began. Year after year ll Inrreased and for ten years Wire suffered torments Irom being unable to sleep. But, strangely, his health remained unimpaired. His sleeping hour grew shorter and shorter and again he consulted many speclnltsts. Almost every physician had a different theory about what the electric stroke had dona to his system, but none could suggest, a cure. Finally Wire learned 10, do without any 'sleep whatever. To rest his body he would lio for se.eial hours 011 Tt couch,, but his eyes always temaluod wlds open and his brain apparently always 'was active. Hs frankly told his friends of his affliction, and several .physicians who - doubted his word put him to extreme teals. Those tets. liowever, never served to make the man Bleep. It la only for the last fourteen years that Wire'n malady has been known outside, of his home. Although he sal. I he hal not slept In six years before, the outs.de World knew nothing of It. Wheri ucwepaper ac counts and magazine articles 011 the subject of his sleep'essness first excited wide Inter est Wire was employed as right flagman on the I-ackawunna railroad. The d I recto' of that road read the atorles about their employe with St eat alarm, (Mid his esse re ceived special attention. . '...J..W-,. -V 1: " 1 "If It in true thst this man does not st. In the daytime or any other time, how ran he be relied upon lu perform his deles properly?" Inquired one of Hie board. "Suppose a wreck were to occur on our system," said another, "the whole country would hold us up lu scorn because we em ploy a man who never sleeps to flag our trains." This Alonso Wire's Insomnia lost him his railroad Job. Thereupon he entered pp.lt cx, and, not finding It neceparv to uaste Ui-ic in slumber, he soon became, a power in the community. . Eventually he waa appointed to be chief of police, a Job for a real wide awake man. No crook ever bothered Hack- ettstown much in the period that It had "the only police chief who keeps both eyes open." The only effect of his inability to take his rest as other persona take, theirs waa a decrease of a few pounds In his weight. After serving his township fur several years and having saved enough to keep him comfortably,. Wire retired and' lived in sleepless peace with hla wife and daughter. Even during his recent illness his brshi never stopped working, but his physicians said that did not seem to make his Iuiik trouble worse. Gradually, however, his con dition became worse. Two nights ago. Just before hla eyes closed for the last time, he called his wife to his side! "The Lord be praised !' ' he whispered. "I'm going to sleep at last." New York Piens. Hew to Serve Watermelon. "Watermelons sre esperlslly cooling and refreshing on a hot dsy because of th quantities of dellcloiiHly-flavored Jules which they contain," says Fannls Merritt Farmer In Woman's Horn Companion, "The edible portion Is sometimes thor oughly chilled, cut In small cubes (remov ing seeds), sprinkled with powdered sugar and arranged In coup glasses for ths first course st luncheon or dinner. For family use It Is most attractively served in on of the following ways: Cut a section three or four Inches In thickness from ths center of a chilled watermelon. With a sharp knife cut out a circle of th pink pulp (the edible portion) and plac upon a chilled serving dish- of correct slse. Serv In pie- shaped pieces on chilled plates or eut oft a thick slice from both ends of melon (that the halves may stand level) and cut In halves crosswise. Arrange on a serving dish on a bed of green leaves. If any ars at hand." To Prevent Cnrdlln. Benzoin 1 to be found In most home made cream and lotion. Being added last, it frequently causes curdling, unlass It is put In drop by drop while ths mixture is constantly stirred. The necessity of slow mixing of msy onnaise Is well known. When th yolk ot a hard-boiled egg Is mixed with a raw volk there Is much less danger of curdling, and oil can bs added faster from tha start, When this dressing has gone back, put ting ths bowl In a larger one of orackad Ic will sometimes stop itf If not, start with a fresh yolk, and when It has stif fened add the curdled dressing slowly, Both custard and whipped cream will curdle It sherry Is added too rapidly or In too largs proportions. Most housekeepers know tha dlffloulty of making cream of tomato soup. To les sen danger of curdling add a pinch of soda to tha scalding milk and pour slowly Into tha hot strained tomato.
