NEW YORK. June 23 The croD DrosDect
proved its doiniranl Influence on stocks
again today and forced into the background
tne more cheerful sentiment of yesierday
growing out of the brightening prospects
lor rauroad iaf Increases, and the Im
proved Investment demand lor new capital
of tei mgs.
Ihe amount of rainfall officially reported
lelt a dubious feeling regarding the re
ports of abundant rains whlcn helped to
send stocks upward yesterday, and stocks
started a heHitat.ng and uncertain move
ment to correHpond.
With the price ot wheat ruling 2c a bushel
higher than yesterday and the advance Sus
tained during tiie morning tne stock mar
kets mixgivmgs over the state of spring
wheat In Kevrral of the northwestern states
were revived. The agreement of the i'rice
C'uirent and the northwestern miller In
their reference to the situation there as
"critical" for the spring wheat crop ap
pealed with force to the prevailing uneasi
ness. 'ine Importance attached to the crop
news obscured such happenings as the re
turn of J. 1'. Morgan.
A story from Fails that Mr. Morgan was
bringing home a plan for a restriction of
copper production by Joint agreement with
European producers failed of effect on
coppers. 1 he additional items cleared up
by congress and the promise thus held out
of an early adjournment were equally
ignored by the market.
The retention of the Bank of England
discount rate occasioned some profenslons
of dlHappuintment from London sources.
The conviction Is unabated that the bank
rate will come down following the meeting
of the half yearly settlements on July 1
and, a period of notable ease of money Is
promised to follow. Foreign exchange rates
here continue to fall. The placing of finance
bill with London bankers Is reported to
be going on again.
The easing of the money market In New
YorTt Is restricted to . the shorter periods.
The effect on the Investment demand for
securities Is only moderate.
Although the Bprmg wheat outlook was
the Influencing factor, the spring wheat
grangers were not alone In feeling the
effect. The drooping tendency was fairly
uniform and was accompanied by a shrink
age In volume of business from that done
yesterday. The passing of the half yearly
dividend on Minneapolis & BU Louis pre
ferred weakened the Hawley group and
hurt; the general list In the late trading.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value,
$2,123,000. United Htates 3s declined 14 per

CATTLE Receipts of cattle at all market
nolnts were falrlv liberal for a Thursday.
At this market the total for the four days
shows a gain ot about 1,600 bead over the
corresponding period of last week and of
about 6,4u0 head over a year ago. in other
words, receipts for the week to date are
larger than tor some time back. There was
nothing In the general situation to bring
about any improvement In the market and
reports from all points were discouraging,
making the market here slow and weak
right from the outset.
Prices on all kinds of cattle were weak
and lower than yesterday and the trade
In a more or less demoralised oondition, as
was the case yesterday. Just how much
lower the market really was is not easy to
say, when making comparisons with yester
day, but as compared with the early pare of
last week good beef steers are 2o'o50o lower,
with the common to medium kinds 6otf"i5c
lower. Cows and heifers have shown fully
as much break as beef steers, with grass
kinds showing still more, they being In
many cases $1.00 per hundred lower. Stock
era and feeders are in many canes 6060
lower.
cjuotatlons on cattle: Good to choice
cornfed sleers, $7.258.00; fair to good corn
fed steers, $6.o0i.26; common to fair corn
fed steers, $j.0tHni.60; good to choice cows
and heifers, JS.2Ii4i8.7o. fair to good cows
and heifers, $4.ooni5.25; fair to good cows
and heifers, $2.764. 00; good to choice stook
ers and feeders, 40.00416 90; fair to good
stockera and feeders, $4.25&6.00, common to
fair stockers and feeders, $3.7634.26; stock
