NEW YORK. Mav 1. The nrnfeaalnnnt element In the stock market defined It as oia out," today, meaning that practically no stocks were offered for sale. The buying was meagre to the point of starvation, but bids had to be advanced, nevertheless to secure stocks. Heading was most conspicuous and the operations in that stock "were ascribed to a speculative party lately active In Wabash and Rock Island. Calms were circulated of large concealed asaeta In the Reading treasury In the form of equities in securi ties held which are said to be under valued In the company's balance sheet. The Cana dian Pacific rise was accompanied b u mors of Intended increase In disbursements to stockholders. There were Intimations that official an nouncement waa to be made regarding the St. Paul transactions. Time rates for call loans ran off to below 3 per cent, although the almost total lack of demand for stock left this showing without much significance. The retention of the Bank of Kngland of ficial discount rate waa In accordance with expectation. The feature of the weekly re turn again was the growth of $22,&35,O00 In government deposits through the Inflow of tax payments and the drawing down of "other deposits" to the amount of $i8,8s0,0U0 to meet thene payments. The fact that gold continues to go out from London to various destinations makes It likely that the Rank of England will maintain Its control of the money market rather strictly. It is estimated that the loss will reach $3,609. Tho only cause that can be assigned for the fire Is that It was started by a tramp who had been sleeping In the hay. As soon as the flames were discovered an attempt was made to lead tho eleven horses out of tho building. Three were taken to safety, but the remaining eight were fire mad and all efforts to lead them through the smoke and fire was futile and they perished. SUE FOR H. F.
