NEW YORK, Feb. 21 The days opera
tions In stocks Were almost wholly confined
to the customary closing up of open con
tracts by the professional operators on the
eve of a holiday. The bearish sentiment
which has prevailed, among the speculative
element was revealed by the predominance
of short contracts to be retired. Opposing
traders were Inclined to take advantage of
the necessities of the shorts by bidding up
prices and striving to take the market
away from their opponents. The narrow
limitations of the market to these profes
sional operations was subject of common
comment. It was supposed at the outat
that the weekly bank statement would be
given out at noon and there was some ao
tivlty based on the assumption that a
strong bank statement would be before the
public before the market closed. When it
became known that the statement would
not be published until after 8 o'clock, the
dullness of the market was sensibly aggra
vated. The strong feature of the market was the
arroup of oopper industrials, with sympa
thetic effect on other metal Industries. A
number of circumstances combining to give
thla group strength. It has suffered ac
utely from pressure for some time, during
which a considerable Short Interest has
been built up. Yoeterday and today 'the
downward course In the price of metal,
which encouraged the selling of the securi
ties has bcrn halted and a sharp rebound
recorded. There was a conspicuous rlne In
Louisville 4k Nashville, which was attrib
uted to the substance of the statemont
made by the president of the company rela
tive to the wage reduction question. That
question continued to receive much discus
sion In the financial district together with
the probable bearing on It of the Investi
gation of conditions ordered by the presi
dent of the United Btates. Some influence
on the -speculative tone was felt from an
Intimation that the Interstate Commerce
commission might have Information In
reply to the president which would tend to
uphold the contention of railroad compan
ies for the necessity of retrenchment of
labor cost.
Rates for Urns money for the longer
period showed a continued advancing ten
dency today. Responses to the call for
conditions of national banks on February
14 made today will be followed with Inter
est as indicating the prospect In the money
market. (Foreign exchange also was firm.
A sharp contraction In the week's outgo of
wheat . compared with last week helps to
explain a scarcity of commercial bills In
the exchange market. The bank statement
discloses the full expected gain in cash,
but the loan expansion proves unexpectedly
heavy, apparently on acoount of subscrip
tions to the New. York bond Issue. Cana
dian Pacific stock subscriptions during the
week also made additions to the loan show
ing. Honda were Irregular. Total sales, par

CATTLE Receipts were exceptionally
heavy for a Friday an'd Indicated that the
country was looking for a better market
towards the close of the week. At (my rate
the supply was fully twice as heavy as a
week ago and Included a liberal percentage
of rather deBlrable cattle. Eastern markets
were In practically the same condition, sup
piles being far in excess of the requirements
at all points and the result was a show,
lower marktt both here and elsewhere.
Opening bids were all of lO&lfic lower than
yesterday and while some of the more de
sirable grades did not sell quite that much
lower there were plenty of Instances where
they did cover the decline. The trade waa
slow all forenoon and at noon quite a good
many cattle were still unsold.
Offerings of cows and heifers were also
decidedly liberal and with very little com
petition from eastern buyers and outside
butchers, locul packers had little difficulty
in making their purchases at prices lojl6c
lower than yesterday or very little differ
ent from last Monday. The tone of the
trade was weak throughout and the move
ment very slow on account of the Indiffer
ence of buyers, but as salesmen were
generally anxious to clean up the offerings
before Saturday, prospects were favorable
for a final clearance at the decline. Veal
calves held about steady, but bulls, stags,
etc, were very dull and unevenly lower.
In stockers and feeders the trade waa
reasonably active as far as lt went as there
waa quite a little outside demand In addition
to tho usual Inquiry from local speculators.
Desirable light weight stuff sold perhaps
a little better than yesterday, but the heavy
and medium weight grades went at yester
day notches. The week closes with prices
pretty close to 26c higher than last week
and with nothing in the pens to be carried
over to next week.

- HOGS There' was a surprisingly large
run of hogs for a Friday and the quality
of the offerings was very good as a rule.
Lower markets rast, a aeuk provision
market and heavy receipts were all against
the sellers, and they hud to submit to a
decline of lory 15c all around. All classes of
buyers were decidedly bearish In their
views and could hardly be Induced to look
at anything except the hogs of good weight
and quality. Common lightweight stuff
was hard to sell at any price and prospects
were that some of the commoner light
loads would have to be cs'ried over until
Saturday. The market rather weakoned a,
the morning advanced and-the close waa at
the low point of the day. Tops today
brought 84.30 as against 34.40 yesterday and
the bulk of the trading was at SI.tnXy4.10
as against 84 16h4.25 yesterday.

SMKh, Keceiuts of sheep this morning
numbered only twenty cars, a proportion
of which were consigned Direct to local
houses and not offered for sals. The mar
ket has been very uneven the last, few
days, but sales In most cases show fx fair
advance over the first part of the week,
but today. wlUi few on hand to supply the
urgent needs of ths trade, packers were
Inclined to set back figures to last week's
basis, so as compared with a week ago
there Is very little change In values.
On Thursday a string of well bred, well
fed western Iambs sold up to 86.86, the
highest price paid here In some time, and
this morning other desirable loads sold up
to 88-76, with ewes at So, prices fully steady
at current quotations. For less desirable
loads the market was generally quoted 10c
lower than yesterday, or about In the same
notches as before the advance.
There were several loads of feeding lambs
offered and ths market In that direction
showed no special change from that of
frevlous days. The inquiry from the coun
ry hss been fair and prices as a rule srs
quotably steady on anything at all desira
ble. Quotations on good to choice fed sheep
