CURATIVE MEASURE PUT IN
Ordlaance Stralatb tenlna: Oat the Slt
natlon Over Fire ISatrlae
House latroduced.
In adjourned session Tuesday morning
the city council passed the September pay
rolls and received an ordinance repealing
the ordinance recently passed providing
for submitting to the people a proposition
for the Issuance of bond for the construc
tion of a Are engine house near Twenty
fourth and Ames avenue. This ordinance
wa rendered necessary through the terms
Of the one passed last week. Under it
term It prevlded that the ordinance should
be in force and effect thirty day, after It
passage. This provision made It Impossi
ble fpr the fifteen day notice required by
law : to be given between the date the
ordinance would have become effective
and the day of the election. The new
ordinance will become effective immediately
upon its passage and approval.
This ordinance may now be amended to
provide that the bonds shall be Issued for
the construction not only of a fire de
partment house, but for a district police
station. Chief of Police Donahue desires
a substation in that part of the city and
Mr. Bedford, the author of tho ordinance,
is willing the propositions should be com
bined in case there I no legal reason
why they should not. Next year tho
police, department will hove fund Im
mediately to equip such a substation, while
the fire department cannot occupy the new
building probably until 1910, since the funds
at its disposal under charter limitations
wlU not be more than enough to pay
salaries and expenses for the present fore
until the legislature Increases the maxi
mum amount that can be levied for fire
purpose.
UNION PACIFIC SHOWS DROP
Report Indicates Decrease la Receipt
Over Expenses of Eighty
Thoaaaad Dollar.
For the first time in many moon the
Union Pacific report of earnings as com
piled by the comptroller fails to ahow a
gain in receipts, but rather the report for
the month of June shows a decrease In
receipt over operating expense and taxes
of nearly $80,000.
The report l made up on different line
than any former report and the operation
for 1907 have been compiled In accordance
with the accounting rules of the Interstate
Commerce commission effective July 1. The
results for the year 1908 have been re
stated In-different form to conform to the
new classification as near as practicable.
The officers give as a reason for the great
increase in operating expenses the Increase
In wages, the much greater cost of fuel
for locomotive and the greater charge
for renewal and depreciation of equip
ment. hlch are required In the new ac
counting system.
The gross receipts for July were $7,233,
814.23, an Increase of $10, 1.10 over July,
1908. The . operating expense and taxea
were $4,192,011.18, an Increase of $1,106,563.47.
The net receipt were $3,041,983.06 and
showed a decrease of $79,398.37.

A. tiiarriage ceremony at which not a
word' was apoken was performed at 8
o'clock last evening at the home of Adam
Waybright. 3224 Charle street. The reason
for the silent service was that both- the
bride. Miss Dina Waybright, and the groom,
John Moore, are deaf mutes. Rev. Charles
W, Bavklge, who officiated, wrote the neces
sary question on a tablet, and the bride
and groom wrote their answers. The mar
riage followed a courtship carried on- en
tirely In the sign language.
It was the Intention at first to have the
ceremony In sign language through an In
terpreter, but when If was found the tablet
and pencil would do aa well, an Interpreter
was dispensed with. Mr. Moore is a cook
at a local restaurant and carries recom
mendations from several doxen caterers In
tha west for whom he has worked, testi
fying to his ability and efficiency. The
ceremony was witnessed by the relative of
the couple and a few friend.
Mr. Moore first intended to have a public
ceremony In the county Judge' office, but
the bride preferred a quiet home wedding,
and the first plana were changed. The
couple will live at 3235 Charles street,
