CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISION
Ken tn res of the Trading; and Closing

kut broke 2c today because of favorable
crop conditions in the northwest. At the

He. provisions were 2V4o higher.
The market opened firm because of a
decrease of 4.064,000 bu. In the amount of
breadstuff on passage. Later th market
weakened on reports of wot weather In tha
northwest, and prices dragged all day. Re
ports from Kansas that tha crop will be
much larger than had been previously esti
mated, and th possibility of a etrike- of
telegraph operators also depressed values.
The chief selling was by commission
houses, said to be acting in the Interest
of northwestern concerns. The market
rsllled from the low point of ths day but;
closed weak. September opened c lower

new YORK. Julv 16. Tha volatile up-
shoot of prices of stocks and tne furious
activity of tne trading of Uie first hour
today gave an Impression of violent specu
lative activity tnd ot a stock market re
vival such as bad not been seen for a
long time past. The subsidence of the
activity after that was so abrupt as to
be ratner. dlsconcortUig to the operators
who were attempting to follow the move
ment. Shares sold in the first hour ag
gregated H,0iO, while for the- socond hour
the total dropped to 78,000 shares. Tha ani
mation of the early dealings owed some
thing to th surprise of a short Interest,
which had followed th abrupt relapa
of th middle of last week and was left
uncovered when the favorable bank state
ment and th opinion formed towards tha
Harrtman report carried prlews upwards
and alarmed ths shorts. The recommenda
tions of the Interstate Commerce commis
sion accompanying the Harriman report
was regarded as tacit admission that small
opportunity existed for making a cai
against the railroad combination under
present laws.
Sobering considerations were brought for
ward again. Of thene. the money market
position Is most Influential. In spite of
last week's gain of 84,020.8(0 In the surplus
reserves of th banks that Item stands at
only $.877,)0. which Is the lowest for this
date since 1893, a year with which a com
parison Is not auspicious. The Interior de
mand for the harvests Is too near at hand
to make this a comfortable margin on
which to undertake any extensive specu
lative activity, and In fact. New York ex
change dropped abruptly to fifty cents dis
count at Chicago today. The foreign ex
change market last week showed clearly
the effect of the efforts of borrowers her
to secure resources abroad. This move
ment seemed to be abandoned today, fol
lowing th stronger showing of the banks
on Saturday, and -foreign exchangee rates
rose briskly. Copper fell In London and
on the local metal exchange and kept alive
anxiety over the stability of that market.
Prices held moderately ror most oi tne
day, even after the demand had flattened
out completely, but the speculative buyers
of the morning threw over their holdings
In tha final hour and the result was a r-
actlon which left stocks lower than at th

Bonds were steady. Total saiea, par

CATTLT3 Receipts of cattle were qu'ta
moderate this morning and trains were
very much delayed by sofe tracks, so that
it was late In the forenoon before every
thing reported was In sight. Among the
cattle on sale this morning, were soma
of th best seen here in a long time.
There was a very fair demand for de
sirable fat cattle of all kinds. Oood to
chotc yearling steers were In especially
good demand, there being several outsido
orders In hand. While the market did
not open very actlvs and while It was at
no time what might be called an active
market, nevertheless tha cattl commanded
food, steady to atrong prices and prac
Ically everything; In sight changed bands
In fair season. Among the offerings were
some very good beeves, which sold as
high as 17.00, batng the highest prtoe paid
for cattl on thl market since 1902. There
were also a few range beeves among the
rcalpts, which sold mostly at 4.80(Q5.2S.
Cows and heifers wer in very good de
mand and sold freely at varyaatisfactory
prices. The market was somewhat un
even, so that sales looked anywhere from
steady, to a good deal higher, according
as a buyer happened to take special liking
to th stun, io ay in least, 11 was a
very satisfactory market.
Stockers and feeders were In light supply
and there was no quotabl chang In the
market.
