which waa conalderably in exceaa of pre
Moua estimates and 1,672,000 bushels

market and also depressed prices on the
local exchange. Weather conditions In

KDW YORK. Juna 21. Apart from the
wide significance of a stagnant stock
market, such aa today a, the immediate
; penses for clerk hire, high rents and In
i many cases for leased wires, a dull market
la naturally depressing. Ana yet con
siderable encouragement of a negative
kind might be derived from such a market
aa today's In the power of resistance
shown to what were substantially unfavor-
! able factors. Demand, indeed, was almost
I utterly prostrate, but selling orders were
, In Insignificant volume and the vibration
of pricea was of the feeblest. Prices are
not thus sustained In a dull market held up
by artificial forces. The small effect pro
duced by today's adverse Influences fa a
proof of tne practically stable equlllblrlum
of the market at present.
The development that attracted most at
tention during the day waa the engage
ment of l,lm,.c of gold for shipment to
London tomorrow, while the movement to
Paris was extended by tha engagement of
an additional $1,5ii0,iA). It was understood
that the" Bank of England, In order to al
low of a profit being made on the ship
ment to London, was allowing Interest on
the amount to the shipper while It waa In
transit. This is the device employed by the
Har.k of France to attract gold when the
margin of profit as an exchange opens Is
narrow or Is lacking. So far as is known
amongst exchange authorities In New
York, this Is the first time the Bank of
England has been known to make this al
lowance on gold shipments, with tha rng
slble exception of the Boer war crisis.
Raising the bid on the price of gold In
London within narrow limits usually meas
ures the extent of the departure of the
hingland tnmi'.utlon from the normal at
tractions of the exchange market except aa
the money rate is influenced by the con
trol of resources. The knowledge of the
nature of the bid made by Ixindon had a
dlnquletlng effect and aroused apprehen
sion of some occult cause lying back of so
urgent a demand. Rumors were rife of
further financial difficulties In connection
with the over-extension In Egypt. The dls-
oroers in tne soutn or nance induced li
quidation for Paris account in London.
Helling of securities here for foreign ac
count was Insignificant, as it was Indeed
for any account, but the sentimental effect
of thf' foreign situation was considerable.
The banks have lost on sub-treasury oper
ations since the last statement $4,409,000,
and receipts on balance on the Interior
movement offset this probably less than
a million. This does not count tomorrow's
shipments of 2.6u0,000 of gold. Last week
the surplus reserve stood at only $4,614,626.
The preservation of tho surplus seems to
depend therefore on a scaling down of
credits. Call money rates, however, were
somewhat lower than yeaterday. The
money rate In London also receded, as did
the price of gold, In spite of London's
urgent bid for New York gold. A tone of
