Durham, N. C runner-up in the Grand
American handicap last year, won the pre
liminary handicap at the Chicago Gun Club
grounds today with a total of W out of a
possible loo. Two brothera, Tom Graham
and J. E. Graham, of Long Lake, 111., tied
for second position, with )" eaz-h. The field
was made up of 357 shooters and included
many professionals, who shot for targets
only, the monetary part of the event be
ing limited to amateurs. 'Lee Barkley of
Chicago made the high score for profess
skmals with a total of 97. The entire purse
amounted to 11,496.
Lyon, the winner, shot from the nineteen-yard
mark, while Tom Graham stood
on the sixteen-yard mark and his brothel
on the nineteen-yard mark.
Five states were represented In the team
hoot, nineteen teams of five men each'
facing the trap. The second Illinois team
Won the event with a total of 4CA. All shot
from the sixteen-yard mark at 100 targets
each. Missouri was second with 452. This
team was composed of F. E. Rogers, Ruclc
lin: Harvey Dixon, Orinoco; R. Thompson,
Calnesvllle; Ben Holland, Moherly, ami
J. S. Thomas, Pleaxant Hill. Illinois had

had a narrow escape from being killed in
the last race at Oravesend today, when
his mount, Incachee, fell atter being
bumped. Incaohee waa in second place
near the finish, when park Row. a 80 to 1
shot, in au endeavor to crowd through on
the rail, ran Into him. causing him to fall.
Koerner waa thrown right Into, the path
of the thirteen oncoming horses, and it
seemed to tho spectators that he must be
trampled and killed. When plckad up the
boy was unconscious and bleeding freely
from a badly lacerated scalp, but at the
Emergency hospital the doutora pronounced
his injuries not serious. Park Row won by
