the Day.
NEW YORK, May 23. -The atock market
today relapsed Into a condition of lethargy
from which the spell of liquidation this
week briefly awakened It. Yesterday' brisk
rocovery waa due to the retirement of a
large short Interest and the usual effect
was seen today In the reduction of the
buying necessities which a short Interest
Involves. The demand was bo far curtailed
that renewed attack on prices was invited,
but this attempt developed the fact that
aupport was being accorded to gome of
the Influential stocks. Also there waa no
auch liquidation Induced by the decline in
prlcea aa waa dislodged In the bear rai ls
of Tuesday. Traders thus met with dis
couraging factors In whichever direction
they attempted to move prices.
The attempts were practically abandoned
at timea ami the trading was In a condition
"i semi-siagnatlon with a barely percep
tlblo desuent of prices. The downward
tendency was renewed at the last. Some
steadying effect was due to the reaction
In the wheat market and to various reports
"i iniproreu conations or trie wheat crop,
but there waa nothing aufllclently conelu-
n me news 10 overcome the situation
uoui ouying atocKs ror long accounts or
lor investment. Foreign markets showed
the same heavy and Inert conditions and
the same doubts over the Investment situ
ation to be reflected. Money conditions
are hardening In London and $l,'-?,o gold
whs shipped from there to Paris. Lubor
difficulties In the South African gold mines
threaten some Interruption to London's
gold supply. London also has lost control
of the, American exchange and Is unable
to shift the Paris demand for gold upon
New York. This may be due to the fact
that Japanese funds withdrawn from Lon
don are remitted to thla country In pay
ment for railroad material and equipment.
Paris continues uneasy over the money
outlook, although the Bank of France In
Its weekly statement to.lny showed an ac.
oretlon of upwards of $4.0 0.(j() in , gold
holdings. The money market here was
easy on the surface. This Is duo In part to
the purpose of lenders to keep their funds
In a form of loons which may be recalled
readily. The condition of ease In call loans
Is regarded as a sign of the uncertain
rJ'n over the money prospects. The
$5,o),ih Erie note Issue was the latest ad
dition, to the capital necessities of the rail
road. Other Issues are felt sure to come.
N'w. T.?rk Central was pointed nt as the
moat likely candidate for the next Issue
of aecurltlea to be announced. The New
York banks continue to gain on auhtreas
ury operations and Interior exchanges In
dicate the continuance of the flow of cur
rency toward New York. Some special
Bnlpments to Canada are being made,
however, which may afTeot the showing of
the next bank statement. Rankers keep
up their Interest In the question of with
drawal of government deposits from the
national banks In preparation for bond
redemptions on July 1. It 1b hold that
auch withdrawal might operate to prevent
gold exports to France and so keep re
sources available for this market In case
of need. The fall In foreign exchange,
however, seems to have averted the pres
ent likelihood of gold exports without this
action bv the treasury. The passage of the
2-cent fare bill at Albany was a factor
'n the weak closing of the market.
