10 EXAMPLE FOR ALL RANGERS Judgs Harrison Thinks Land Fenoera Con riotion Will Have Salutary Effect BRIDGEPORT. MAN FEARS FOR BIG ONES Old Tim Nebraakaa Sara Iook Oat that Hmry nanajrra Do Rot Cucape the Uw, Judge T. O. C. Harrison, ex-chlef justice Of the aupreme court of Nebraska, in In the city on businpss before the federal courts. He said In reference to the recent convictions In the land fencing cases: "I think the conviction of the Krause brothers for the appropriation of public lands for private purposea will have a salutary effect upon the cattlemen. It Is an abuse that should long since have been remedied. This conviction will show the government la earnest and these unlawful fences have to come down. While I would not wish to say the cattlemen have defied the government In maintaining these fences after the government had ordered them down, they certainly relied too much upon the government's apparent Indisposition to do anything In the matter. They now aee the government means Its order have got to be obeyed." Look Out for the Blar Ones. I. W. Cardlnell of the vicinity of Bridge port, Neb., in discussing the effect of the conviction of the Krause brothers for illegal fencing of public lands, said Monday morn Ing: "I hope the result will bo for the best, but there does not seem to be any serious ef forts toward getting after the men who have fenced 40,000, 60,000 and In one or two Instances nearly 600,000 acres of public lands. The Krauses, I understand, had fenced some 6.0U0 acres adjacent to their own holdings of 10,000 acres. It was all right to cinch them for it. Hut now don't let the big fellows slip. Of course the Krauaei may have scared half a dozen timid homesteaders In that sparsely settled country, but I have not heard of anybody tearing down fences over In west of Al liance and up toward Harrison, and the Lord knows that there are thousanus and thousands of acres of land under fence there that ought to be thrown open for set tlement. The big cattle barons are the ones that have fenced In that country, and It Is pretty near as much as a man's life Is worth to try to make a filing on a piece of free land up there unless he can mako an arrangement with the cattle barons. It is not so bad right around us in the North Platte region, but yet the cattlemen, have Klnkalded scores and scores of sections Inside their enclosures and will pretty near hold the land, too. You see, they have succeeded In getting a million or so acres withdrawn from enry under the Klnkald act along the river highland for irrigation purposes, and it can no more be Irrigated than the moon. All the same, those re served lands are utilised as range lands by the big cattlemen, and I haven't heard of any small cattle owners being permitted to range their cattle there. I think the land Is fenced much after the manner that the Krauses had their ranges fenced, by a combination of a few fake homestead, reservoir, desert and other fil ings, and no man who cannot afford to hire his lsrwyef by the year dare attempt to buck the big cattle men by laying any claim to land there. The conviction of the Krauses may have the effect of causing some of them to pull down their fences, but the big cattle men will keep staving It off Indefinitely under one pretext or another. I hope for the best, but I have lived In the cattle country too long to believe that the big cattle men can be made to quit until they get ready to do so."
