The first bour's dealings todav wera onlv
slightly above the average. The marking

have not abandoned the market entirely.
It is supposed that a pool exists ln these

movements were entirely confused and ir
regular. Such a market can have oniv a
negative significance. The wavering move

unsettlemnnt over the immediate prospects
It is not expected that anv pronounced
position will be assumed in the tock mar

the critical pertud for the crops, several
eeks hence, ha been passed.
Opinions over the bank statement, owing
to the large special ofieratlons which have
occurred, including the shifting of deposits
incident to the transfer of the Japanese
loan proceeds, differ. Call money was
slightly firmer, but not enough to be an
Influence. Some consideration is beginning
to be given, however, to the preparations
tor the half yearly settlements. The usual
Interest and dividend disbursements mav
have more than the customary supplement
ln the demand to replenish reserves bv the

CATTLE There wns a light run of cattle
on sale today, only about thirty cars being
offered, and of these seven came consigned
direct to a packer. Buyers were out ln fair
season, hut were slow in taking hold.
The market on beef steers held up in good
she.pe today, prices ruling Just about steady
with yesterday. There was a good, strong
tone to the trading, but nevertheless the
movement was slow. On some of the good
kinds prices In some cases looked a little
stronger, but the general run of the stuff
did not show material change. The msrket
todav might be described in other words as
lornl5o higher thnn Wednesday and the feel
ing Is better. The improvement In price,
the last two days puts the market In better
shape and part of the loss of the first three
davs of the week has been regained.
There were only two or three loads of
cows on snle today and the demand for this
class of stuff was good. The market was
fairly active pnd a clears nee was made in
good season. Prices ruled generally steady
with yesterday, which puts the market
about 15c higher than it was Wednesday.
Bulls, veal calves and stsrs were scarce
todHy and there was no quotable change In
prices on these kinds.
The supply of stockers and feeders wa
very limited today, hardly a full load being
on sale. As has been noted for some time
past, the demand for this class of cattle
has been Urht and this week ha been no
exception Prices today ruled generally
teady. P.epresentative sales:
isEEF steers.

SrIEEP There wera no aheeD on ala
today, only one car, consigned direct to
a packer, being received. Receipt for
the four days of the week were fairly lib
eral, shorn lambs, as haa been the case
for some tlm. constituting the big end of
the arrivals The general market so fsr
this week on fair to medium lambs and
sheep is 10ril6c lower. It must be remem
bered, however, that the receipts at this
point have consisted almost entirely of
these common to medium grades, and the
decline noied above is no criterion of
prices on anything choice Good to choice
stuff, either lambs or heep, would un
doubtedly bring steady to stronger prloes.
The market toward the close of the week
is ln better shape than at the opening, and
the feeling Is that choice grades would
sell very satisfactorily. About the only
reason for the decline here Is thst the
market ha been glutted with these medium
kinds of sheep and lambs, Just th kinds
the packers did net wsnt.
