Aa.rge attention continued to be given to ttie .quiiatie controversy. The general belief arrived at yesterday as to tne very drastic character of tne recom mendations contained in the report of the investigation committee had a continuing eftect when the stock market opened. Jt was generally felt that the formal pub lication ol such a report would be a de pressing Influence on stocks and would cause general uneasiness from tne fear of reprisal of hostilities which mlg-ht be pre cipitated amongst the coinenuing parties to the dispute. The opening downward movement In stocks soon overran itself and the pressure to sell lightened materially. When shorts attempted to cover Uiere develojied some scarcity of slocks. Reports from the i-quitanle meeting Indicated a vigorous ef fort to prevent tne adoption of the report of the Investigating committee with seem ing prospects of success. Operators who had solo stocks on the appfehenition that the publication of this report would de press prices were naturally Inclined to re buy on the late prospecta. Union raclflc waa especially responsive to the changes In sentiment on the Equitable Incident, as it has been throughout- The special strength of Reading waa oonnected with revived rumors of a coming Increase iu the dividend on Central Kaliroad of Sew Jersey. The government report on cotton, notwithstanding its un favorable comparison with last year s fig ures, both as to condition and acreaaa, was better than had been expected In the trade, as was evidenced by the heavy un loading of cotton In the grain markets on the other hand, the Missouri stale re port, with the large decline in condition of winter wheat shown during Msy, was an unfavorable factor. Kaiiroad earnings for April shows that very large increases in o)erating expenses, with effect on net earnings, resulting m the case from the lennpylvania lines both east and west of Flttsburg and Erie In a decline in net earnings.
