rise In tcmnerature lielnar nreclselv the con
riltlons needed by the fall-sown crop. A lack
of any definite damage reports Inspired con
siderable confidence In shorts, who sold
OUlte freely, with the result that the mar
ket was decidedly nervous durlnir the llrxt
two hours. After selling at Vn!i4c, July
declined to 8Sao. Sentiment, however, graa-
iially became more consistently bullish as
fresh reports of damage to the spring wheat
crop were received. Sharp advances at
Minneapolis and Itiiluth gave emphasis to
thn crop damage advices. While news from
the southwest was conflicting, the prepond
erance of reports still claimed considerable
damage In that section. The sensational
bulge In May corn contributed materially
to late strength In wheat. A few minutes
ncrore the close July wheat touched tle
highest point of the session, sales being
made at 9o"i!1i't,c. The market closed
practically at the ton. final quotations on
July being at 9(V 90o. Clearances of
wheat and flour were equal to 33.700 bu.
Prlmarv receipts were 239. 4o0 bu , compared
with 196.100 bu. a year ago. Minneapolis,
Duluth and Chicago renorted receinis or
158 enrs, against 9H cars last week and 1-8
cars a year ago.
A sensational jiimD of O'ic In the price of
May corn furnished fresh evidence of the
congested condition of the market for that
delivery. The scarcity of offerings was the
principal reason for the sharn upturn. A
moderate demand from shorts forced the
price of May up from 68c, the opening fig
ure, to file. Toward noon the demand be
came extremely active, resulting In a quick
advance to t!6e. Near the close a revival
of the aggressive demand from shorts
caused a final upward hound to 6Tc. The
close was at V4e. In sympathy with the
strength of Mav, distant deliveries were
strong. July opened V'&4ic higher at 48V3'

NEW TORK. May 24. -There was sub
stantial strenirth In tndav's stock market,
as was evidenced by the length of the list
of stocks which were lifted between 1 and
2 points during the day's trading, and In a
few exceptional Instances more than Hint.
The trading offered a nuintier of remarkable
features. One was the email volume of tho
demand on which the very notable gains
were effected. The day's transactions fell
below those of either yesterday or the day
before. If the buying was fur the account
of uncovered shorts. It was decidedly frto
from any sign of urgency or such trepida
tion as the bear trader short of stock
usually manifests.
There was rather free selling during the
first hour owing to the wide advances at
which prices opened. Prices have made io
many false starts towards recovery that
sentiment hai become extremely suspicious
of these sudden advances over night, which
have melted away during the day in more
than one Instance lately. The same sus
picious attitude was maintained by the
professional element today. At different
stages or the advance the market sank into
practical stagnation, but the ground yielded
on such occasions was Insignificant. There
was no definite news to account for the
movement and, in fact, some of the day's
developments might be regarded as ad
ditions to factors recently regarded as tin-
tavoranie. i ne grain markets still nan
their crop damage reports. The Chicago
strike situation seemed aggravated and in
danger of spreading. The secretary of war

on the other hand, showed a perennial
freshness. The revival of rumors that an

powers In that Meld to refrain from hostil

the day s market. The special prominence
of I'nlon Pacific, St. Paul. Northern Pa
